ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior Kate Fahey of the University of Michigan women's tennis team swept the singles and doubles title for the second time in her career as the ITA Midwest Regional Championships wrapped up on Tuesday (Oct. 23) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Fahey took the title with a 6-4, 6-2 win over junior Chiara Lommer in the final on Tuesday. Fahey jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first set before hanging on for the 6-4 win. In the second set, Fahey grabbed a break at 3-1 and did not look back. Fahey reached the championship match after rallying for a 6-7 (4), 7-5, 6-3 win over fellow senior Brienne Minor. Fahey won nine of the match's final 12 games after falling in a 5-3 hole in the second. In the earlier rounds, she had a pair of 6-0, 6-0 wins and only dropped three games before the semifinal round.
Fahey and Minor took the doubles title with an 8-6 win over Ohio State's Shiori Fukuda and Luna Dormet in the championship match. The Wolverine duo fell in an early 2-0 hole but won four of the next five games to claim a break of their own. That was all the space Fahey and Minor needed, keeping the break advantage throughout the rest of the set. U-M made good on its third match point, coming through on a deuce point on Fahey's serve to wrap up the title. Prior to the final match, Fahey and Minor made quick work of each opponent they faced, never losing more than three games in the previous four matches.
Minor and Lommer helped Michigan comprise three of the four spots in the singles semifinals, guaranteeing U-M to have a player in the final. Lommer knocked off Northwestern's Clarissa Hand in three sets (6-2, 5-7, 6-3), while Minor fell to Fahey.
Junior Giulia Pairone (2-1), sophomore Alyvia Jones (1-1), sophomore Bella Lorenzini (0-1) and freshman Anca Craciun (0-1) also competed in the singles main draw for Michigan at the event. Junior Lera Patiuk (1-1) fell in singles qualifying.
Michigan takes the weekend off before heading to North Carolina for the UNC Invite, Nov. 2-4.
