ROCHESTER, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team scored the first six points of the game and led wire-to-wire in an 85-59 win over Oakland on Sunday afternoon (Dec. 9) at the Athletics Center O'rena.
Senior Nicole Munger recorded her second 20-point game of the season, going for 21 points on 6-for-8 shooting from the floor. Freshman Naz Hillmon just missed her second straight double-double, totaling 16 points and nine rebounds, with sophomore Hailey Brown scoring 12 points with seven boards. Sophomore Deja Church had nine points and a career-high nine assists as Michigan totaled 20 helpers on the afternoon.
Michigan out to a 6-0 lead on buckets from Munger, senior Hallie Thome and Brown. Oakland hit a deep three but Michigan followed with five more points on a Munger triple and Hillmon score underneath from Church, forcing an OU timeout at the 5:23 mark of the first quarter and U-M up 11-3.
After Oakland came within two at 13-11, Michigan answered with a 14-0 run that featured a pair of triples from Munger, four points from junior Akienreh Johnson and four from Church. Oakland hit a desperation shot right past halfcourt as time expired in the first quarter, giving Michigan a 27-14 lead after 10 minutes.
Following a Hillmon putback, Oakland called its second timeout of the afternoon with 5:22 remaining in the second quarter and Michigan up, 36-21. The Wolverine lead hovered around the 14-point mark the rest of the quarter as U-M hit the break with a 44-30 lead on the Golden Grizzlies.
Munger went on her own personal 8-0 run in the middle of the third quarter, making good on a three-point play, a pair at the line and a deep triple to push Michigan's lead to 64-37 with 3:58 left in the third quarter.
Oakland opened the fourth quarter with eight straight points, getting within 19 as Michigan called timeout with 7:30 remaining. Out of the timeout, Brown hit a short jumper in the lane, Munger hit another pair at the line and Hillmon cleaned up an errant shot as Michigan's lead bumped back up to 25 (75-50).
All 14 players saw action in the contest, with 10 Wolverines finding the scoring column.
U-M returns home on Saturday (Dec. 15), hosting Morgan State at 11 a.m. The first 500 fans in attendance will receive a holiday hat.
