ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The No. 9 University of Michigan water polo team continued its hot streak, as it  outscored its two opponents, 29-9, on Saturday (March 10) to stretch its win streak to 10 games with the highlight of the day coming when senior Caroline Anderson broke the school's career-points record.
U-M faced off against two conference opponents in nonconference action at Hartwick University. The Wolverines got off to big early leads in each game to win handily against Brown and No. 17 Princeton.
Game 1: No. 9 Michigan 16, Brown 5
Junior Julia Sellers provided a big spark for the U-M offense with a career-high five goals in the game. She had two in both the first and third quarters.
Michigan dominated the first half, as it scored the first four goals of the game and held a 9-1 lead at halftime. Brown did not score until the 1:09 mark of the first period.
The second half was more even, but while the scoreboard showed a 7-4 Michigan lead, the game was well out of reach.
Anderson tallied three goals and two assists for her second hat trick of the year. The Wolverines' team leader in goals, sophomore Maddy Steere, also had a hat trick with one assist.
Sophomore goalkeeper Heidi Ritner made five saves and collected two assists and two steals in three quarters of action.Â
Game 2: No. 9 Michigan 13, No. 17 Princeton 4
The second game of the day was highlighted by Anderson breaking the school's career-points record held by Shana Welch. Anderson's nine points on the day gave her 396 in her career, two more than Welch. Anderson also holds the U-M career-assists record with 234 after posting five today.
"I have so much respect for Shana," said Anderson. "Team 18 wouldn't be where we are today without her and the many incredible players that have come through this program. Career points have never been my focus when playing. I play because I love the game, my teammates and the staff. This is my last year at Michigan so I really just try to play like there is no tomorrow.
"Breaking this record just makes me realize how grateful I am to be surrounded by incredible people every day at practice and while competing."
Michigan's defense was stout again as it held both opponents to five goals or fewer on the day. That is 10 opponents in 22 games this year that failed to score more than five goals against the Wolverines.
Princeton took an early 1-0 lead at the 4:13 mark but, Michigan responded in resounding fashion. U-M went on a 12-0 run that went into the fourth quarter and lasted 21:22 minutes.
Ritner allowed two goals in 28:10 minutes of action with five saves.
Michigan's offense was balanced with 10 different players scoring goals. Sellers followed up her first game of the day with two goals and two assists to lead the way. Steere contributed two goals and one assist and senior Christina O'Beck scored a pair of goals.
Michigan will finish off the weekend against host No. 13-ranked Hartwick, tomorrow (March 11) morning at 10 a.m.
