The No. 9 University of Michigan Water Polo team will close out the non-conference portion of its schedule this week in Los Angeles with four games at the LMU Invitational on Friday and Saturday (March 16-17).
THINGS TO KNOW
• The Wolverines are 18-7 on the year. All seven losses have come by four goals or less, with three coming by one goal.
• Michigan has won 11 straight games; it has averaged 12.6 goals per game with an average margin of victory of seven goals during that span.
• The 11-game win streak marks the 13th double-digit win streak in program history and third straight year the Wolverines have won 10 game or more.
• Head coach Dr. Marcelo Leonardi is now 95-37 (.720) as the Michigan head coach, including a 23-1 (.958) record in the Collegiate Water Polo Association.
• Michigan is ranked No. 9 in the USA Water Polo National Collegiate Rankings and is No. 9 in the CWPA Women's Varsity Top-25. U-M has been ranked in the top 10 for 45 consecutive polls.
• The Wolverines have played against ranked teams in 21 of its 25 games so far. They have faced four top-five teams and seven top-10 opponents. They will play three more ranked teams this weekend at LMU.
• The offense has really started to click and has featured a balanced attack from the starters to the last player off the bench. Five players have scored 20 goals or more, including the team's leaders in scoring Maddy Steere (45) and Julia Sellers (41). School-record holder in career assists, Caroline Anderson, is the catalyst with 41 assists, as she has doubled any other player on the team in that category. Â
• The U-M defense has only allowed two opponents to score in double figures with Cal getting 11 goals and Pacific 10 goals. Meanwhile, 10 of U-M's opponents have been held to five goals or fewer. Michigan has not allowed a team to score in double digits over the last 14 games.
• Some potential Wolverine milestones include: Steere is four goals away from 100 in her career, junior Kim Johnson is one point shy of 250 for her career and Sellers is 14 points shy of 200 career points.
Opposing Teams
• No. 24 Cal Baptist is 12-9 on the season with a 2-9 record against ranked teams. Michigan is 8-0 against the Lancers all-time with the last win coming in 2016, by a 15-6 score. Â
• Fresno Pacific has an 8-9 record and is 0-4 against ranked teams. This will be just the third meeting between the Wolverines and the Sunbirds. U-M won, 18-6, in 2011 and 13-2 in 2014. Â
• No. 11 Loyola Marymount is the host school with a record of 11-10. The Lions will make their home debut this weekend, playing Michigan in the third game. LMU leads the all-time series, 15-7, but Michigan is 4-0 under Leonardi in the series.
• No. 21 San Jose State brings a 5-11 record to the tournament. One of those losses was to Michigan at the Stanford Invitational on Feb. 4, as the Wolverines took the matchup, 14-3. The series between the two schools is even at 10 with Michigan winning five in a row.
