ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- A four-run first inning and a season-high three home runs propelled the University of Michigan baseball team to its 16th straight win on Friday evening (April 13) as the Wolverines defeated the Maryland Terrapins, 10-4, in the series opener at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
The victory is Michigan's 16th straight, which marks a new record under head coach Erik Bakich and is tied for the program's longest win streak since 1988, when the Wolverines won 18 in a row. Michigan also won 16 consecutive games during both the 2007 and 2008 seasons.
The Wolverines put a man on base in every inning and were aggressive on the basepaths with five stolen bases and six extra-base hits. The Maize and Blue totaled five walks and 10 hits, and left only three men on base.
Michigan set the tone in the bottom of the first with four runs. Junior Ako Thomas led off the inning with a walk and quickly took second on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore Christan Bullock. Junior Jonathan Engelmann drove in Thomas for a 1-0 lead with a double down the right-field line, and freshman Jesse Franklin followed with his fifth homer of the year with a two-run blast to right field for a three-run edge. Sophomore Dominic Clementi then picked up his first career homer with a solo shot to right-center field to put the Wolverines up, 4-0.
Michigan extended its lead to five runs in the bottom of the second on an RBI single from Bullock that allowed freshman Jack Blomgren to score, and the Wolverines maintained a 5-0 lead until the top of the fifth, when the Terrapins rallied for two runs on three hits.
The Maize and Blue responded in the bottom of the fifth inning with three runs on RBIs from Franklin, Clementi and freshman Jordan Nwogu.
Following a scoreless sixth, Maryland added two runs in the top of the seventh, but a solo home run by Engelmann in the seventh and an unearned run in the eighth pushed Michigan to a 10-4 victory.
Sophomore starting pitcher Tommy Henry finished with six strikeouts and allowed three runs on four hits through 6.1 innings of work to earn his sixth win of the season. Junior Troy Miller, freshman Jeff Criswell, and junior William Tribucher combined to close out the remaining 2.2 innings in relief.
Engelmann led the Wolverine offense with three hits and a walk, while Franklin, Clementi, and Nwogue each finished with two hits apiece.
