OMAHA, Neb. -- Despite coming from behind twice to tie the score, the University of Michigan baseball team surrendered the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning and fell to Purdue, 5-4, on Thursday evening (May 24) in the second game of the Big Ten Tournament at TD Ameritrade Park.
The score was tied at 4 through eight innings, but the Boilermakers ended the game in the bottom of the ninth with a bases-loaded single. Purdue started the inning with a wild pitch on ball four, and baserunner Milo Beam was able to advance to third base in the confusion of the play. The Wolverines intentionally walked the next two batters, loading the bases to set up a force out at home, but an single up the middle scored Beam for the 5-4 win.
The walk-off loss came just one day after Michigan rallied for a 10-inning walk-off win over Iowa on Wednesday (May 23) in the opening game of the Big Ten Tournament. The Wolverines will face Ohio State in an elimination game on Friday (May 25) at 3:30 p.m. CDT.
Purdue struck early with a run in the first inning, and added two runs in the bottom of the fourth for a three-run lead.
The Wolverines put men on base in the second and third innings, but were unable to score until they rallied for three runs in the sixth. Sophomore Dominic Clementi got the inning started with a base hit through the right side, and freshman Jesse Franklin followed with a two-out single to left-center field. Clementi took third on the play, which allowed Franklin to advance on the throw and give Michigan two men in scoring position before a walk to redshirt junior Miles Lewis loaded the bases. Freshman Jordan Nwogu then reached base on a strikeout-wild pitch combination that allowed Clementi to score, cutting the Purdue lead to two. With the bases still loaded, senior Brock Keener roped a base hit to center field, which scored Franklin and Lewis and tied the score, 3-3.
Purdue got a run back in the bottom of the same inning to take a 4-3 lead, but Michigan answered in the eighth with a leadoff double from Franklin and an RBI from Nwogu.
Michigan totaled nine hits in the effort but went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position and left seven on base.
