GOLF, Ill. -- Freshman Hailey Borja posted her second straight top-20 individual finish and led the University of Michigan women's golf team for the first time as the Wolverines tied for 14th place at Northwestern's Windy City Collegiate Championship on Monday and Tuesday (Sept. 30-Oct. 1).
After tallying team totals of 300 and 305 to begin the Wildcats' home event, which featured 10 of the top 25 teams in the country, the Wolverines found themselves looking to make a move in today's final round. Birdieing five of her final seven holes at Glen View Club, sophomore Sophia Trombetta posted a 71 (-1). Adding an even-par 72 from Borja and a 73 from senior Hannah Ghelfi, the Maize and Blue closed with a 291 and tied Augusta for 14th with an 896 total.
Borja notched her second straight 217 (+1) to tie for 19th. She was the third-highest finisher from the four Big Ten teams in the field. After bookending rounds of 72 (E) around a second-round 73, she has now posted four of her six rounds at par or better and is two over par in 72 holes of golf. She also had a 217 (+1) total in her collegiate debut at the Glass City Invitational (Sept. 16-17).
Behind Borja, sophomore Ashley Lau tied for 57th with a 226 (76-75-75) tally, while Trombetta's sub-par final round put her in a tie for 65th at 227 (76-80-71).
The Wolverines return to Ann Arbor for some training before heading Chapel Hill, North Carolina, for North Carolina's Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational, Friday through Sunday, Oct. 11-13. The three-day, 54-hole event will feature a stellar 17-team field playing at Finley Golf Course. Last year, the Wolverines finished 14th led by Ashley Kim's tie for 15th.
