ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 25-ranked University of Michigan women's basketball team had five players score in double figures and never trailed in a 97-46 exhibition win over Northwood on Wednesday evening (Oct. 30) at Crisler Center.
Freshman Izabel Varejão led the way off the bench for the Wolverines, scoring 18 points on 8-for-10 shooting to go with six rebounds and three blocks in 21 minutes. Sophomore Naz Hillmon turned in 16 points on 6-for-7 shooting, while senior Kayla Robbins chipped in 15 points. Senior Akienreh Johnson went for 11 points and sophomore Emily Kiser rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10 points.
Michigan held a 44-25 advantage on the glass, spearheaded by seven boards each from Kiser and junior Hailey Brown. U-M totaled 17 assists, as sophomore Danielle Rauch handed out six in 15 minutes.
Michigan led wire-to-wire in the contest, racing out to a 12-0 lead on a pair of free throws from Hillmon, five points from Robbins, a triple from Brown and a Johnson layup over the first four minutes.
The Wolverines took a 55-19 lead into the locker room behind 14 first-half points from Varejão and 11 from Hillmon.
The third quarter featured 19 combined fouls, slowing the pace as Michigan held a 16-12 advantage on the scoreboard in the period. U-M closed the quarter on an 11-3 run, capped by layup from freshman Michelle Sidor and a three-point play from Kiser with 23 ticks left on the clock.
Michigan outscored Northwood, 26-15, in the final stanza en route to the 97-46 win. All 11 Wolverines saw the court and played at least 10 minutes.
U-M will kick off the regular season next Friday (Nov. 8) at Crisler Center against Western Michigan. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on BTN Plus.
