Wolverine Bench, Defense Send Michigan Past EMU

» Michigan got 29 points from its bench, highlighted by Izabel Varejão's 11 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three blocks.
» The Wolverine defense allowed just 38 points on the day, the fewest since giving up the same number to LIU Brooklyn on Dec. 6, 2018. It was the fewest points scored by EMU against Michigan in the history of the series.
» Michigan allowed just nine points in the first half to Eastern Michigan, giving up four in the first quarter and five in the second. The four points were the fourth-best defensive effort for a quarter in U-M history, with the five points coming in at No. 13.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team got 29 points from its bench and held Eastern Michigan to single-digit scoring in three quarters in a 57-38 win over the Eagles on Wednesday afternoon (Nov. 27) at the Convocation Center.
Freshman Izabel Varejão led the way for Michigan, turning in 11 points off the bench to go with seven boards, four assists and three blocks. Senior Akienreh Johnson went for nine points and nine rebounds, with sophomore Emily Kiser turning in nine points and classmate Naz Hillmon turning in eight points and 10 rebounds.
Neither team could get much going in the first quarter as Michigan grabbed an 8-4 lead after the first 10 minutes.
Michigan got it going in the second quarter as layups from senior Kayla Robbins and Hillmon, followed by a freshman Michelle Sidor jumper gave Michigan a 20-6 lead with 2:39 left in the frame. Junior Priscilla Smeenge came out of the EMU timeout and canned a right-wing triple to nudge the Michigan lead to 23-6.
Sophomore Amy Dilk hit a three-pointer at the top of the key to beat the halftime buzzer, sending Michigan to the locker room with a 26-9 lead.
EMU outscored Michigan, 20-18, in the third period, but Robbins scored on the left block as time expired to give Michigan a 44-29 lead after 30 minutes.
The Wolverines opened the fourth quarter on an 8-2 run for a 52-32 lead, getting six points from Kiser and a pair of free throws from Dilk to force EMU's second timeout of the quarter at the 6:19 mark.
U-M allowed just nine points in the fourth quarter to keep the Eagles at bay to wrap up the 57-38 win. Michigan held EMU to 23.6 percent shooting (13-for-55) for the contest and forced 18 turnovers in the bounceback win.
Michigan will be back at home Sunday (Dec. 1), when they host Morgan State at 1 p.m. at Crisler Center. Fans can use their Michigan-Ohio State football ticket for free admission to the game.
