ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team (5-1) returns home to begin a four-game homestand Sunday (Dec. 1), hosting Morgan State (3-4) at Crisler Center. Tip is set for 1 p.m., and the game will be streamed on BTN Plus.
• Freshman Izabel Varejão had the best game of her young career in Michigan's last game, going for 11 points, seven rebounds, four assists, three blocks and a steal in 21 minutes off the bench at Eastern Michigan (Nov. 27). The points, rebounds and assists all set new career highs for the Brazilian. She leads Michigan with 14 blocks on the season, ranking fourth in the Big Ten with 2.3 rejections per game.
• Michigan cranked up the defense in its last contest, holding Eastern Michigan to just 38 points on 23.6 percent shooting from the field. U-M kept Eastern in single-digit scoring in three of four quarters, the third time Michigan has done that since the NCAA switched to quarters in 2015-16. Michigan allowed just nine points in the first half, the best first-half defense since giving up the same total against Alcorn State on Dec. 28, 2013. The four points Michigan surrendered in the first quarter is tied for the fourth-best mark, with the five points allowed in the second quarter tied for 13th in U-M history.
• U-M has had a different leading scorer in four of its six games, with each player turning in a career high in scoring. Senior Kayla Robbins scored 17 points in the first start of her career in Michigan's opener against Western Michigan (Nov. 8). Classmate Akienreh Johnson notched the first 20-point game of her career with 21 in U-M's victory over Kent State (Nov. 15). Sophomore Naz Hillmon has led Michigan in scoring three times, highlighted by a career-best 28 points against Akron (Nov. 16). Freshman Izabel Varejão joined the party with the first double-figure scoring game of her career when she turned in 11 points at Eastern Michigan (Nov. 27).
• Michigan features two double-figure scorers in Naz Hillmon (15.5 ppg) and Kayla Robbins (10.5 ppg). In addition, six other Wolverines are averaging at least 6.0 points per game: Amy Dilk (9.7 ppg), Akienreh Johnson (8.7 ppg), Izabel Varejão (7.3 ppg), Hailey Brown (7.2 ppg), Michelle Sidor (6.5 ppg) and Emily Kiser (6.0 ppg).
• Morgan State (3-4) is coming off a 78-77 loss at Saint Peter's this past Tuesday (Nov. 26). The Bears are averaging 71.1 points per contest on 38.8 percent shooting while allowing 62.0 points per game on 40.7 percent shooting. Morgan State features three double-figure scorers in Dahnye Redd (16.3 ppg), Ashia McCalla (12.4 ppg) and Chelsea Mitchell (12.0 ppg). Michigan and Morgan State are meeting for the second straight season, with U-M recording a 70-47 win in Ann Arbor last year.
