The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team, in the midst of a four-game road trip, will travel to Queens, New York, to take on the St. John's Red Storm on Saturday (March 2) at noon from DaSilva Memorial Field. The matchup will be streamed live via ESPN3.
Wolverine Bites
• Senior Brent Noseworthy enters the week one goal short of tying Ian King (2014-17) for the most goals in program history with 93. Noseworthy also has scored at least one point in 29 straight games, the eighth-longest streak in the NCAA.
• With six goals and 12 points through three games this season, junior Avery Myers already has surpassed his previous season high in goals and points. Myers marked five goals in each of his first two seasons, with an average shooting percentage of 16 percent. This season, his six goals on 18 shots result in a 33 percent clip.
• Michigan has made a habit of sharing the ball on the offensive end thus far, assisting on 27-of-37 goals and averaging 9.00 assists per game, which ranks fifth nationally. Sophomores Kevin Mack and Alex Buckanavage are tied for the team lead in helpers with seven, ranking them No. 16 in the NCAA. In only 17 career games, Mack is 21 assists behind Ian King (2013-16) and his school record of 49 assists.
• The U-M defense ranks No. 7 in the country in caused turnovers with 12.67 per game. Led by senior longsticks Nick DeCaprio (eight) and Michael Borda (seven), fellow senior shortstick MJ Melillo also boasts four caused turnovers. DeCaprio ranks second in school history in the category with 47, trailing Chase Brown (2013-16) with 66.
• U-M has led after the first quarter in all three contests this season, and have outscored opponents by a 10-2 margin in the opening quarter.
• Heading into Saturday's contest, Michigan is receiving votes in the most recent USILA Coaches Poll (Feb. 25) and the Inside Lacrosse Media Poll (Feb. 24).
Opponent Preview
St. John's
The Red Storm, who, like Michigan, is receiving votes in both major polls, enter Saturday with a 2-1 overall mark and are coming off an 10-9 upset road win over No. 11 High Point last Saturday (Feb. 23).
The Johnnies boast an explosive offense that ranks No. 9 in the NCAA in points-per-game (22.67) and scoring offense with 14.33 goals per game. Mike Madsen leads the team in goals (10) and points (14), while Jonathan Huber has eight goals and two assists for 10 points.
The Red Storm defensive unit allows 12.67 goals per game, ranking 47th nationally, and have a faceoff win percentage of 50 percent, ranking 40th. Brody Agres is the man in the cage for SJU and has a save percentage of 45.
St. Johns head coach Jason Miller and U-M head coach Kevin Conry are Rockville Center, New York, natives.
Saturday's game will mark the first meeting between Michigan and St. John's. Michigan is 0-2 in contests played in New York State, falling to Hobart, 11-7, on March 9, 2013, and Colgate, 10-7, on March 17, 2013, at Citi Field.
