
Hillmon, Thome Lead Michigan to Road Win Over Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team took the lead in the closing minute of the first quarter and never looked back, recording a 76-70 win over Wisconsin on Sunday (Feb. 3) at the Kohl Center.
Freshman Naz Hillmon led a quartet of double-figure scorers, going for 20 points on 8-for-9 shooting. Senior Hallie Thome turned in 12 points, with classmate Nicole Munger hitting three triples en route to 10 points and sophomore Hailey Brown chipping in 10 points. Freshman Amy Dilk handed out eight assists to go with seven points, two rebounds and two steals in 37 minutes. Michigan shot 53.6 percent (30-for-56) in the contest while holding Wisconsin to 40.7 percent shooting (24-for-59).
The teams traded baskets in the early going before U-M scored five straight points to break a 12-all tie for a 17-12 advantage with 21 seconds left in the first quarter after junior Akienreh Johnson's three-point play. Wisconsin scored before the period ended, staking Michigan a 17-14 advantage.
U-M opened the second on a 6-0 run on three straight layups from Thome, Hillmon and sophomore Deja Church. With a 23-14 lead just 1:35 into the frame, Michigan held Wisconsin scoreless until the 5:49 mark as a Badger layup cut U-M's lead to 23-16.
Michigan held the Badgers to just eight points in the second quarter and ended the frame on a 6-2 spurt behind baskets from Thome, junior Kayla Robbins and Hillmon to take a 32-22 lead at halftime.
After Wisconsin trimmed Michigan's lead to six, 35-29, with 7:47 left in the third quarter, Hillmon converted on back-to-back three-point plays over the next 41 seconds to push Michigan's lead up to 12 points, 41-29.
Wisconsin once again answered back to get within nine, 49-41, with 3:29 to go, but Church hit a triple from the left wing and Hillmon made good on a layup to push Michigan's lead back to 13, 52 seconds later. Â
Hillmon grabbed the offensive board off a Brown missed free throw and stuck the layup with 7:44 left, forcing Wisconsin to call timeout as U-M's lead swelled to 16 (65-49).
Wisconsin answered with an 8-0 run to get within nine, 65-57, with 4:32 to go before Thome scored on a lefty kiss off the glass with 3:45 left to push Michigan's lead back to 10.
The Badgers once again closed within six, but Munger hit a triple behind a Thome screen with 1:33 to go, to push Michigan's lead back to nine (72-63).
After two U-M defensive stops, Dilk and Munger combined to hit 3-of-4 at the free throw line, nudging Michigan's lead to 75-63 with 44 ticks remaining.
Wisconsin responded with a 7-0 run after Michigan made substitutions but freshman Ariel Young split a pair of free throws with 2.2 seconds to seal the victory.
Michigan will return home on Thursday (Feb. 7) when it hosts Nebraska at 7 p.m. The game will be Michigan's annual pink game, and it will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
