ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team collected a pair of victories over visiting Manhattan College on Sunday (March 15) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. The Wolverines completed Saturday's suspended contest scoring nine unanswered runs in a 16-9 win before taking Sunday's scheduled game by a score of 4-0.
The wins give Michigan its third series sweep of the season and improves to the Wolverines to 13-4.
Play resumed in Saturday's suspended game in the bottom of the sixth inning with Michigan leading, 8-7, with one out and a runner on second base.
In the bottom of the sixth, sophomore Jordan Nwogu walked to lead off and came all the way around to score on an opposite field double from sophomore Jesse Franklin for an 8-7 lead. A day, and two batters, later, Dominic Clementi laced a sacrifice fly to right field and the Wolverines then pulled off a double steal with redshirt senior Miles Lewis (single) scoring from third for a 10-7 lead.
Michigan put the game away in the eighth inning on RBI hits from Clementi (single), Blake Nelson (double) and senior Jimmy Kerr (single) before Franklin unloaded a three-run blast to account for the 16-7 margin.
Nwogu led the way offensively with four hits while Lewis followed with three. Franklin, Brewer, Clementi, Nelson and Donovan each had two hits. Redshirt junior Benjamin Keizer (1-0) earned the win in relief and freshman Willie Weiss earned his fifth save with three scoreless innings of relief.
Prior to Saturday's game being suspended, Manhattan took its first -- and only -- lead of the series as it scratched for a run in the opening inning.
Junior Jordan Brewer tied the game in the bottom of the third inning on a two-out single to center field.
In the fourth, U-M loaded the bases with nobody out. Nwogu sent an 0-2 changeup past a diving third baseman for a two-run single. One batter later, Brewer stepped to the plate and connected for his second grand slam in as many days, this one a liner over the left-center field wall for a 7-1 lead.
Manhattan edged closer as U-M starter sophomore Jeff Criswell ran into some control issues in the fourth. A leadoff walk and a wild pitch were followed by an RBI single to left field. With two outs in the inning, Nick Cimillo caught a fastball and drove a two-run homer over the wall in left to make it a 7-4 game.
A critical two-out error in the sixth gave Manhattan two more runs and Keury Abreau then plated the tying run – with all runs being unearned.
In Sunday's scheduled game, Michigan broke open a scoreless game with four runs in the fourth inning. After loading the bases with no outs, Nelson delivered two runs with a double to the wall in right while Kerr (sacrifice fly) and sophomore Jack Blomgren (single) also plated runs.
Redshirt freshman Isaiah Paige (1-0) earned a win in his first career start. The freshmen threw five shutout innings in which he scattered two hits, with a strikeout and no walks. Keizer threw the final two innings to end it. The game was scheduled to end after seven innings due to the completion of Saturday's game and Manhattan's travel schedule.
Michigan will return to action on Tuesday (March 19) at 4 p.m., when the Wolverines host Western Michigan at the Wilpon Complex.
