ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team fell short against the No. 11 Notre Dame Fighting Irish by a 12-9 count on Tuesday (March 19) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
U-M (3-4) played short-handed, missing its top-four faceoff options as well as All-American midfielder Brent Noseworthy. As a result, the Wolverines won just four faceoffs in the game, compared to Notre Dame's 20. U-M mitigated the deficit at the dot by causing four turnovers with a workmanlike riding game.
The Wolverines got on the board first when freshman Bryce Clay scored less than two minutes into the game, but the Fighting Irish (4-2) responded with three unanswered goals. Sophomore Alex Buckanavage found the back of the net before the quarter ended, cutting the deficit to 3-2 heading into the second quarter.
In the second quarter, Notre Dame outshot Michigan, 13-6, but three clutch saves from graduate student Tommy Heidt kept the Wolverines in the game. Buckanavage and Clay each scored again in the second, but two goals by the Fighting Irish in the final minute of the half gave them a 7-4 lead heading into halftime. Buckanavage's second-quarter goal was the 1,000th in program history.
In the third, Clay and senior Decker Curran scored back-to-back extra-man goals, with seniors Brandon Shima and Justin Gibbons also scoring for the Wolverines, who brought the game to a tie at 8 with under a minute in the third. But, with just 1.4 ticks on the clock, Notre Dame regained control of the lead after a Griffin Westlin goal and never looked back.
The Fighting Irish outshot U-M, 11-6, in the final quarter and outscored the Maize and Blue 3-1, rattling off four unanswered goals. With 1:42 remaining, Buckanavage buried his third goal of the game, but that was as close at Wolveries could get.
Buckanavage (three goals, two assists) and Clay (three goals.) led the Wolverines offensively, while senior Nick DeCaprio recorded a team-high four ground balls and three caused turnovers.
