ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team fell to the Delaware Blue Hens by a 16-13 score Saturday (March 23) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
Michigan (3-5) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and saw the score knotted at 4 at the end of a quarter. U-M went 7-of-9 on faceoffs in the first quarter, keyed by junior FOGO Matt Dellacroce, who was 6-of-10 for the game. However, he sustained an injury early in the second quarter and was unable to participate in the rest of the contest. Michigan went 8-of-21 at the dot with Dellacroce out of the game.
Delaware (7-2) built up a 5-4 lead at the 14:07 mark of the second before sophomore Alex Buckanavage tied the game at 5 with 10:20 left in the quarter. The Blue Hens built a 10-6 lead with 1:19 to go in the half, but Michigan closed with a pair of scores from Buckanavage and junior Avery Myers with one second left in the half to trail 10-8 after two quarters.
U-M crept within a goal at the 14:38 portion of the third on a goal by senior Decker Curran, but the Blue Hens rattled off four straight goals to build up a 14-9 lead with 5:37 to go in the third and never looked back.
With 3:58 remaining, freshman Javon Johnson scored his second goal of the contest to cut the Blue Hen lead to three, but the Wolverines were unable to inch closer, ultimately falling by the 16-13 scoreline.
Myers and Buckanavage led U-M in goals with three each, while Curran led the Wolverines with five points, including a career-high four assists. Junior Finn Goonan had a team-high six groundballs, while freshman close defender Andrew Darby had four pickups.
