Â
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Hurdler Roland Amarteifio was in midseason form in his 2019 outdoor season debut as the University of Michigan men's track and field team closed out the final day of competition at the Vanderbilt Black and Gold Invitational on Saturday (March 23).
Amarteifio ran to the win in the 400-meter hurdles in career-best fashion after posting a runner-up finish in the 110-meter hurdles, leading the way for a Wolverines squad that posted 18 top-10 efforts on the day.
The junior hurdler was making his first appearance of the 2019 spring season, as were all of the distance runners, jumpers and throwers who competed this weekend. More Wolverines will compete for the first time outdoors next weekend at Stanford.
Amarteifio is already running as fast as he did at the Big Ten Championships a year ago, clocking a career-best-tying 51.73 for the win in the 400-meter hurdles by nearly two-thirds of a second. The performance likely will finish the weekend as a top-20 performance on the national list, and puts him in great position to make a return appearance at the NCAA East Preliminaries in May.
Running into a headwind of 2.3m/s (just over five miles-per-hour) earlier in the afternoon, Amarteifio clocked the second-fastest time of the day in the 110 hurdles in 14.68.
Teammate Noah Caudy joined him in the top-10 in both events, just missing his 400-meter hurdles career best in 52.95 to take fourth, along with a 14.88 (+0.5m/s) showing that earned him ninth place in the 110-meter hurdles.
Mid-distance runner Ben Hill completed a weekend that was nearly as impressive as Amarteifio's. After winning the 1,500-meter final in a sprint to the finish on Friday (March 22), Hill doubled back on Saturday to finish third at 800 meters in 1:50.67. He led three Wolverines in the top-10, just ahead of fourth-place Matt Plowman (1:51.64) and 10th-place Cole Johnson (1:54.17).
Turning in an impressive Michigan outdoor debut performance at 3,000 meters was John Tatter, who finished runner-up in 8:31.51.
Also earning a runner-up finish was Lewis Tate in the 2,000-meter steeplechase. Running in the lower-seeded of two sections in the event -- which is not contested during championship season in favor of the longer 3,000-meter steeplechase -- Tate clocked 5:54.18 to take the win in his race and finish second overall. He led five Michigan men in the top-10 in the event, including fellow sub-six-minute runner Joost Plaetinck (5:57.49) in sixth.
Also notching a top-10 finish on the track was Alex Schwedt, who crossed the line in 49.18 for 400 meters to take 10th. He was the Wolverines' top man at 200 meters on Friday.
Headlining the action in the field events was Manning Plater, who took sixth in the discus throw. Plater heaved his best mark of the day -- a 47.53m (155 feet, 11.5 inches) throw -- on his second of six attempts.
The Wolverines also got strong field performances by high jump runner-up Max Wagner (2.00m / 6-6.75) and fifth-place long jumper Daniel Butael (7.02m / 23-0.5).
More Michigan competitors -- including several All-Americans from this past indoor season and previous years making their 2019 outdoor debuts -- will hit the road again next weekend for the Stanford Invitational on Friday and Saturday (March 29-30) in Palo Alto, California.
