ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team scored four times in the third inning en route to a 6-4, six-inning victory over Indiana State on Wednesday (April 10) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
The game was shortened due to Indiana State's travel curfew and ended after six innings with the Wolverines coming up with timely defensive plays to keep the Sycamores at bay.
As it did on Tuesday (April 9), Michigan (23-9) started things in the first inning with a solo home run. This time it was sophomore center fielder Jesse Franklin who took the first pitch he saw and crushed a long ball off the indoor training center, well beyond the right-field wall.
Michigan made it 2-0 in the second when redshirt sophomore catcher Harrison Salter drove home sophomore shortstop Jack Blomgren (walk) with a sacrifice fly to center.
Michigan made it 6-0 with a four-run third inning. Senior first baseman Jimmy Kerr and Blomgren provided RBI singles, another run came home on a passed ball and Salter extended the lead to six runs when he laid down a suicide squeeze bunt to score senior second baseman Ako Thomas.
Sophomore left-hander Angelo Smith provided a good start for Michigan, throwing three scoreless innings during which he struck out four batters and allowed two hits. Junior right-hander Jack Weisenburger earned his first victory of the season (1-0) in two innings of relief. He did allow his first runs of the season when he ran into trouble in the fifth. Two walks were followed by a pair of two-out RBI singles to make the score 6-2.
Working against redshirt junior southpaw Benjamin Keizer, Indiana State scored twice more in the top of the sixth inning, but he induced an inning-ending groundout to get out of further trouble.
Sophomore left-fielder Jordan Nwogu led the offense with a pair of doubles while Salter singled and drove in two runs.
Michigan will return to action on Friday (April 12) when the Wolverines begin a three-game series against Ohio State in Columbus starting at 6:35 p.m. All three games with the Buckeyes will be streamed live on BTN Plus.
