
Michigan Captures Outright Big Ten Championship

» Michigan captured the 2019 Big Ten championship behind an 11-0 conference mark. It is the ninth championship in school history and the eighth in the last 10 seasons.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The No. 14-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team captured the ninth Big Ten championship in program history with a 5-0 win over Maryland on Sunday afternoon (April 14) at the Tennis Center at College Park. Michigan finished the regular season with an 11-0 record, the seventh time in school history the Wolverines have strung together a perfect conference season.
The Wolverines grabbed the early lead by winning the doubles point behind victories at No. 2 and No. 3.
Michigan's No. 3 pair of junior Lera Patiuk and sophomore Alyvia Jones won the final four games of the match in a 6-2 win as the first match off court.
At No. 2, junior Giulia Pairone and freshman Anca Craciun followed the same script by winning the final four games for an identical 6-2 victory to clinch the doubles point.
It was all Michigan in singles action as the Wolverines captured all six first sets.
Pairone was the first Wolverine off court, winning a 6-1, 6-0 decision at the No. 2 spot for her 10th Big Ten win of the season.
Senior Kate Fahey ran her win streak to 15 at the No. 1 spot, dropping just three sets in a 6-2, 6-1 victory for Michigan's third point. The win marked the 126th victory of her career, pushing her past Sarah Lee into second all-time at Michigan.
Jones put up the deciding point at No. 5, winning her third straight match. Jones coasted to a 6-0 win in the first set and dropped just one game in the second to put Michigan's fifth point on the board.
With the team match in hand, senior Brienne Minor grabbed a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 3 before the remaining matches on court were abandoned.
With the win, Michigan has secured the No. 1 seed for the upcoming Big Ten Tournament. Michigan has next weekend off before beginning the Big Ten Tournament on April 26 in Lincoln, Nebraska.
