The No. 17-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team (15-5) heads to Nebraska for the 2019 Big Ten Tournament as the No. 1 seed after going 11-0 in conference action. U-M will face either No. 8 seed Michigan State or No. 9 seed Purdue in the quarterfinals on Friday (April 26) at 10 a.m. CDT. U-M won last year's tournament behind a pair of 4-3 victories over Illinois in the semifinals and Northwestern in the championship match.
Wolverine Bites
• The Maize and Blue heads to the Big Ten Tournament as the No. 1 seed after winning the Big Ten championship behind an 11-0 conference record. U-M has captured eight of the last 10 Big Ten championships and now has nine in program history (1997, 2010-15, 2017, 2019).
• The Wolverines have reached 14 straight championship matches at the Big Ten Tournament, dating back to the 2004-05 season. Michigan won last year's tournament championship behind a 4-3 win over Northwestern.
• Michigan will face either No. 8 seed Michigan State or No. 9 seed Purdue in the quarterfinals on Friday (April 26). U-M knocked off MSU, 6-1, to kick off Big Ten action and came through with a 4-1 win over Purdue. U-M defeated the Spartans, 4-0, in the quarterfinals of last year's tournament.
• U-M has won tournament titles in 1997, 2015 and 2018. The tournament was used to determine the Big Ten champion up until 2009, when the conference started using the regular season to determine the Big Ten champion.
• Michigan went 49-6 on the singles court during Big Ten play, led by Giulia Pairone's 10-0 record and Kate Fahey's 9-0 mark. Chiara Lommer (8-1), Brienne Minor (9-1) and Alyvia Jones (8-1) each only dropped one conference match.
• The Wolverines outscored their conference opponents, 59-7, en route to an 11-0 Big Ten record. Michigan surrendered more than one point to just one opponent (Illinois), while shutting out six teams.
• Seniors Kate Fahey and Brienne Minor enter the weekend as owners of Michigan's two longest singles win streaks. Fahey has won 15 straight matches at the No. 1 spot after dropping her first dual match of the season, while Minor has ripped off seven consecutive victories.
• Brienne Minor became the ninth Wolverine in school history to reach 100 singles wins on the strength of a 24-5 singles record this season. Minor now holds a 104-28 mark on the singles court, ranking seventh all-time in singles wins.
• U-M is 122-6 in Big Ten play under 12th-year head coach Ronni Bernstein after another 11-0 season in conference play. U-M has not lost more than one Big Ten match in a season under Bernstein and has six perfect conference seasons on her watch. U-M has recorded at least 10 Big Ten wins in each of the last 10 seasons.
• Michigan is 14-0 this season when it wins the doubles point, earning victories over Ole Miss, Michigan State, Texas, Pepperdine, Baylor, Nebraska, Iowa, Purdue, Minnesota, Penn State, Ohio State, Northwestern, Rutgers and Maryland when securing the match's first point. U-M switched up its doubles lineup on March 16, with the No. 1 team of Kate Fahey and Brienne Minor and the No. 2 team of Anca Craciun and Giulia Pairone each going 9-1 since the switch.
• The Wolverines have six players who have reached double-digit singles wins in Kate Fahey (32), Chiara Lommer (22), Brienne Minor (24), Giulia Pairone (22), Alyvia Jones (18) and Anca Craciun (14). Fahey is one win away from securing her third 30-win season.
• Michigan features four ranked singles players in No. 3 Kate Fahey, No. 48 Chiara Lommer, No. 49 Brienne Minor and No. 82 Giulia Pairone. Fahey and Minor also come in at No. 32 as a doubles pair.
• Senior Kate Fahey heads into the weekend with a 32-5 singles record this season. Fahey swept the titles at the ITA Midwest Regional Championship and finished as the singles runner-up at the ITA Fall National Championships. Fahey is 126-28 in singles during her illustrious career, putting her second all-time in wins. Fahey's .818 winning percentage is tops in Michigan history. Emina Bektas is tops all-time at Michigan with 129 victories.
