ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Four different Wolverines had multi-RBI games as the University of Michigan baseball team defeated Bowling Green State University by a score of 10-5 Wednesday (April 17) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Bowling Green (12-20) scored in the first inning when the Wolverines not covering first base on an infield chopper resulted in a run for the Falcons.
Senior third baseman Jimmy Kerr put Michigan (25-11) ahead, 2-1, in the bottom of the second inning when he crushed a 2-0 fastball high over the right-field wall, a blast that came off his bat at more than 106 mph.
BGSU reclaimed the lead in the top of the third inning when a pair of doubles and a single chased sophomore starter Angelo Smith from the game in favor of redshirt freshman reliever Isaiah Paige, who worked out of the inning but not before the Falcons took a 3-2 lead on a sacrifice fly.
Following several frustrating innings of near misses, Michigan broke through in the sixth, plating five runs to claim a 7-3 lead. A trio of singles loaded the bases for sophomore second baseman Jack Blomgren, who drove a two-run double into shallow left-center. Senior Matthew Schmidt, in his first start of the season at first base, then sent a deep sacrifice fly to center. Another run came home on a wild pitch before sophomore center fielder Jesse Franklin laced an RBI single to center. The inning could have been much worse for BGSU, but center fielder Jake Wilson laid-out to catch what surely would have been a two-run triple off the bat of junior left fielder Dominic Clementi, helping to avoid further trouble.
BGSU answered with two runs in the top of the seventh, including one run coming across on a bases-loaded strikeout and a wild pitch.
Michigan got those runs back, plus another in the bottom half of the inning that was delayed nearly 110 minutes by weather. In the bottom of the frame, sophomore designated hitter Jordan Nwogu plated two runs with a long double and another run came home on a fielder's choice RBI from Schmidt. BGSU's Wilson again robbed Clementi of an extra base-hit, this time going to the wall in right-center to pull back a potential three-run homer.
Senior second baseman Blake Nelson led the Wolverines with three hits while Nwogu, Franklin and Kerr each had two hits. Nwogu, Kerr, Blomgren and Schmidt each had two RBI.
Freshman left-hander Walker Cleveland earned his third win of the season, allowing two runs in 2.1 innings during which he recorded two strikeouts. Junior right-hander Jack Weisenburger struck out four batters in two innings to close out the game.
Michigan will return to action Friday with a 3:30 p.m. game against Northwestern to kick off a three-game series against the Wildcats at Wilpon Complex.
