ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore center fielder Jesse Franklin homered and drove in three runs Tuesday (May 7) as the University of Michigan baseball team blanked visiting Michigan State, 7-0, at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. The game did not count towards Big Ten Conference standings.
Michigan (35-11) has now won 12 straight games and will return to the Wilpon Complex on Wednesday (May 8) to host Eastern Michigan on Dollar Day at the ballpark. Admission is $1 as are numerous concession stand offerings.
Sophomore designated hitter Jordan Nwogu led off the bottom of the first with a triple off the top of the right-field wall and came home on a sacrifice fly from Franklin.
Franklin gave Michigan a 2-0 lead in the third when he crushed a 2-0 offering 414 feet over the scoreboard in right field for his 12th homer of the season.
It remained 2-0 in the top of the seventh when Michigan State loaded the bases with one out against sophomore reliver Angelo Smith, who worked out of the jam thanks to three nasty sliders against MSU's Zach Iverson and a highlight reel diving catch in right field from junior Jordan Brewer that kept the Spartans off the scoreboard.
In the bottom of the seventh, Franklin singled to left with one out. Brewer hit a shot to the hole at shortstop and everyone was safe, and the pair wound up on second and third base following a throwing error. After a pitching change, senior first baseman Jimmy Kerr laced an RBI single to center to make it 3-0. Michigan added two more runs on a wild pitch and a fielder's choice groundout for a 5-0 lead.
It was Franklin again in the bottom of the eighth as his sacrifice fly was followed by an RBI fielder's choice by Brewer to make it 7-0.
Redshirt junior Benjamin Keizer highlighted Michigan's stellar pitching effort as he improved to 4-0 on the season with 2.1 innings of effective relief of redshirt freshman starter Isaiah Paige, who was also solid in his four innings of work. Both pitchers struck out four batters. After Smith's 0.2 innings of key relief, junior right-hander Jack Weisenburger closed out MSU with three strikeouts in two innings.
