ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team pounded out 13 hits Wednesday (May 8) as the Wolverines cruised past Eastern Michigan, 10-1, at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. U-M has now won 13 straight games.
The teams traded runs in the first inning before Michigan (36-11) took a 4-1 lead through two innings. In the second, senior second baseman Ako Thomas plated a run with a fielder's choice before sophomore center fielder Jesse Franklin plated another run with an RBI and two runs scoring after a fielding error on EMU's right fielder.
Sophomore designated hitter Jordan Nwogu gave Michigan a 6-1 lead in the fourth inning when he lofted his seventh home run of the season over the right-field wall to score Thomas (single). It was Nwogu's third home run in the last five games.
Sophomore shortstop Jack Blomgren plated the seventh run of the game with a sacrifice fly to center field to plate Franklin (walk).
With the game no longer in doubt, Michigan pushed across three more runs in the bottom of the eighth -- all with two outs as junior right fielder Jordan Brewer and senior first baseman Jimmy Kerr collected RBI doubles while senior third baseman Blake Nelson legged-out an RBI triple.
Freshman left-hander Walker Cleveland (4-1) earned the win in relief with the southpaw scattering three hits while striking out one in 3.2 innings of relief. Sophomore Blake Beers and freshman Keaton Carratini both contributed two scoreless innings of relief with Carratini striking out three batters.
Redshirt senior left fielder Miles Lewis and Brewer had three hits apiece while Franklin and Nelson had two.
The Wolverines will return to action Friday to start a pivotal three-game weekend series against second-place Indiana at the Wilpon Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 8 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on ESPNU. The contest also is Teacher Appreciation and U-M Faculty & Staff Appreciation Night.
