EAST LANSING, Mich. -- With an even-par final-round tally of 72, University of Michigan women's golf freshman Ashley Lau tallied a 225 NCAA East Lansing Regional total Wednesday (May 8) and tied for 47th in her first national postseason appearance held at Forest Akers West Golf Course.
"This tournament has been amazing," said Lau. "It's the one that I was looking forward to trying and qualifying for. To finally play in it was so much fun. Although I didn't do as well as I wanted to, there's so many positives to take from it and I look forward to use this experience going forward."
"Ashley hit the ball really well the last two days, and putted great the last day," said U-M head coach Jan Dowling. "The conditions were super tough today, and was an accomplishment to finish at even par."
Earning the Wolverines fourth individual invitation in program history, Lau headed down I-96 to Lansing to make her first national postseason appearance. She opened play on Monday posting a 76 as she carded 15 pars during her first 18 holes positioning her tied for 48th in the 96-player field.
After a near seven-hour delay to the start of Tuesday's second round, Lau battled through missed opportunities to post a 77 -- just her second round above 76 this season. With the tally, she would drop 10 positions to a tie for 58th after 36 holes.
Getting off to a strong start in today's final round, Lau, who started on the back side of the West Course, birdied two of her first five holes to quickly go two-under in her final 18. A bogey on the 15th, was erased by a third opening-nine birdie on the 17th hole helping her make the turn to the front side still two-under.
After striking a tree off the second tee, Lau battled back on No. 2 to draw even with a double bogey. She parred out her final seven holes to close with an even-par 72, helping her to a 225 54-hole regional total to tie her for 47th place.
With Lau finishing her play at the regional and not advancing to the NCAA Finals, the Wolverines season is complete. She closed her first season in Ann Arbor becoming just the third freshman to lead the team in scoring (74.16), as she started all 12 events and led the Wolverines in five of them.
"My freshmen year was unbelievable," said Lau. "I came to the U.S. not knowing how collegiate golf was going to be like for me. Thankfully, I had great coaches and teammates to guide me through. It was truly a great season."
"Ashley gained so much invaluable experience by competing in an NCAA Championship as a freshman," said Dowling. "We are proud to have her represent Michigan, and she is excited to share what she learned with our team for the future."
The top-six finishing schools -- Kent State, Arizona, UCLA, Stanford, Illinois and Indiana -- and the top three individuals -- Michigan State's Haylin Harris and Allyson Geer-Park, and Xavier's Mikayla Fitzpatrick -- of a non-qualifying team advance the NCAA Finals from May 17-22 at the Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
