ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Junior right-handed pitcher Jack Weisenburger and senior infielder Jimmy Kerr of the University of Michigan baseball program were selected on the third day of the 2019 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Wednesday afternoon (June 5).
Weisenburger was selected by the Oakland Athletics in the 20th round as the 614th overall pick, while Kerr was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the 33rd round (982nd overall).
A total of five Michigan student-athletes have been selected in the 2019 MLB Draft. Weisenburger and Kerr join U-M junior pitchers Tommy Henry (74th overall, Arizona Diamondbacks) and Karl Kauffmann (77th overall, Colorado Rockies) as well as outfielder Jordan Brewer (106th overall, Houston Astros). Henry and Kauffmann were selected in Competitive Balance Round B on Monday (June 3), and Brewer was taken in the third round on Tuesday (June 4).
Michigan has had at least one player taken in the MLB Draft in each of the last seven years under head coach Erik Bakich.
A native of Rockford, Michigan, Weisenburger owns a 3.90 earned-run average through 42 appearances over the last three seasons with the Wolverines. During his junior season, Weisenburger has made 23 relief appearances, including 16 scoreless outings, and fanned 30 batters over 29 innings. Overall, the righty has logged 62.1 innings with 63 strikeouts and four wins while holding opponents to a .221 average.
A third-generation Michigan baseball player, Kerr has been a force for the Wolverines in his senior season with 12 home runs and a team-leading 56 RBI. He is hitting at a .270 clip as a senior with a .483 slugging percentage and a .373 on-base percentage, and was recently named the Most Outstanding Player of the Corvallis Regional after going 5-for-16 with four home runs. Kerr has knocked in 83 runs and scored 76 over a four-year career with the Maize and Blue, and has appeared in 145 games with 113 starts. His father, Derek, was a member of the program from 1984-86, and his grandfather (1960-62) was a member of the Wolverines' 1962 National Champion team.
Michigan (44-19) is in the midst a strong postseason run after going 3-1 in the Corvallis Regional last weekend to advance to the NCAA Super Regional for the first time since 2007 and second time overall. The Wolverines are seeking their eighth trip to the College World Series and their third national title.
The draft concludes Wednesday with rounds 11-40 with live coverage being provided at MLB.com.
