LIMA, Peru -- University of Michigan men's swimmers Charlie Swanson (United States) and Ricardo Vargas (Mexico) each won medals at the Pan American Games, held last week (Aug. 6-10) at the Villa Deportiva Nacional. Ali DeLoof (2013-16), an alum of the women's swimming and diving team, also was in action for Team USA.
Swanson swam to gold in the 400-meter IM (4:11.46), almost eight seconds ahead of silver medalist Leonardo Santos (Brazil). With the time, Swanson is now the seventh-fastest American in history and joined a list that includes Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte and former Wolverine Tyler Clary. With the 2018-19 season nearly concluded, Swanson ranks No. 4 in the world and No. 2 among Americans, which makes him a lock for the 2019-20 U.S. National Team.
Vargas won three bronze medals, swimming to podium finishes in the 800-meter freestyle (7:56.78), 1500-meter freestyle (15:14.99) and as part of Mexico's 4x200-meter freestyle relay (7:19.43).
Swanson and DeLoof won gold on Team USA's 4x100-meter mixed freestyle relay. They both swam during preliminaries (3:33.52). The U.S. won gold during the evening's finals.
With the summer's championship season concluded, the Wolverines won a total of 25 medals, including 13 gold medals, three silver medals and nine bronze medals.
