HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team led by as many as three goals in a game that featured four ties, but Hostra closed the contest on a 5-2 run to defeat the Wolverines, 12-9, on Saturday (Feb. 18) at James M. Shuart Stadium.
Michigan (1-1) and Hofstra traded goals in the first quarter that sat at 3-3 at the end of the stanza. Freshman Josh Zawada marked a pair, while junior Alex Buckanavage had a goal and an assist. Hofstra's Ryan Tierney, who had a game-high eight points (four goals, four assists) on the day, had three goals in the first quarter alone.
The Wolverine defense then held the Pride scoreless for 13-plus minutes, building a 6-3 lead until Hofstra's Dylan McIntosh put an end to the run at 8:05 of the second quarter. His first goal of the day cut Hofstr'a deficit to two goals, 6-4. Heading into the half, the score held, with Zawada and sophomore Bryce Clay marking a pair of scores at the intermission.
The Pride (2-0) went on a 4-0 extended run from the 8:05 mark of the second and a 12-minute portion of the third as they took a 7-6 lead. Clay added his third of the day at 3:09 of the third to knot the game at 7, but Hofstra again went on an extended run, this time a run of 5-0, to put U-M behind, 12-7.
U-M answered with a pair of tallies from freshman Jake Bonomi at the 5:23 mark and Buckanavage at 3:58 to run the count to 12-9, but were unable to overcome the deficit.
Senior Matt Trowbridge and sophomore John Kiracofe shared time in goal, with Trowbridge stopping eight shots. Kiracofe had one save in his first action as a Wolverine. The duo of sophomore Nick Rowlett (7-for-16) and senior Matt Dellacroce (5-for-7) combined to go 12-for-23 at the dot. Michigan also held a 23-22 advantage in the ground ball category.
Junior Kevin Mack marked a goal at the 9:48 mark of the second quarter to extend his point streak to 28 consecutive games. Clay ended the day with three goals for his fifth career hat-trick. Both teams went 0-for-6 on extra-man opportunities.

U-M will return home for a Tuesday (Feb. 18) contest against Canisius at 4 p.m. at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
