The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team (1-1) will open up a two-game week when it hosts the Canisius Golden Griffins on Tuesday (Feb. 18) at 4 p.m. from U-M Lacrosse Stadium. Michigan is looking to go 2-0 at home to start a season for the second time in the history of the complex (2018).
Wolverine Bites
• Offensively, U-M is led by a trio of players with seven points, with sophomore Bryce Clay boasting six goals (one assist) on 14 shots. Both freshman Josh Zawada and junior Alex Buckanavage have matching four-goal, three-assist stat lines.
• With 86 points (46G, 31A), Buckanavage is fifth in school history in career points and is 14 points away from becoming fifth Wolverine to reach the 100-point plateau. If accomplished this season, he would become the first player to reach the mark during his junior year.
• Michigan's man-down defense unit has yet to allow a goal this season, holding opponents scoreless on eight opportunities. The number is tied for tops in the NCAA on the campaign. Sophomore faceoff man Nick Rowlett ranks No. 3 in the Big Ten, winning 54 percent of his draws (21-of-39). As a team, U-M is No. 2 in the conference in ground ball pickups, averaging 33 per game.
• With a goal against Hofstra, junior Kevin Mack has a point in 28 straight games and has a point in all but one of his contests as a Wolverine. Former teammate Brent Noseworthy (2016-19) holds the program record for consecutive games with a point at 35.
• Through two games, U-M has played 12 newcomers, with five earning starting nods.
• Michigan boasts a top-30 ranking in offensive efficiency (27.2 percent) and defensive efficiency (25 percent). Michigan's Buckanavage and Clay lead the Wolverines in play shares with 10.5 percent and 10 percent, respectively.
Opponent Preview
Canisius
Canisius dropped its second game of the season, 22-10, to Robert Morris in a neutral-site game. Winless on the season, Canisius fell in its opener, 22-8, to the Wolverines' last opponent, the Hofstra Pride.
The Canisius offense is anchored by sophomore attackman Jacob Buck, who leads the Golden Griffins with 11 points (8G, 3A). Senior captain Mathieu Boissonneault has tallied eight points (5G, 3A) in the first two contests.
The Canisius defense features sophomores Ryan Sharkey and Isaiah Ricketts. The classmates lead the team with four caused turnovers apiece on the season. Senior FOGO Daniel Balawejder leads the team with 12 ground balls and has won 39.6 percent of his faceoffs.
Alum Mark Miyashita is in his third season at the helm for the Golden Griffins. Canisius has added a dozen new players to its roster this season, including 11 freshmen and one transfer. This will be Michigan and Canisius' first meeting since 2015, a 13-5 victory for the Wolverines in Ann Arbor.
