ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team earned a decisive, record-setting 16-8 victory over Canisius on Tuesday (Feb. 18) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium. Bryce Clay (six goals) and Kevin Mack (five) combined to outscore the Golden Griffins and became the first pair of Wolverines to score five goals or more in the same game.
Michigan (2-1) jumped out to a commanding 6-0 lead in the first quarter while holding Canisius (0-3) scoreless for the duration of the period. The opening-quarter run was led by junior attackman Mack, who had three goals in the first quarter alone.
Canisius opened the second stanza with a goal, but a 5-2 Michigan run closed out the first half, giving the Maize and Blue an 11-3 lead going into the third period. The second quarter featured the first career goal for senior midfielder Christian Ford and Mack's fourth first-half goal.
With its eight-goal halftime lead, Michigan also was winning the ground ball battle, 29-15, and had taken a whopping 35 shots. Sophomore Clay contributed a first-half hat trick to pair with Mack's four goals.
Michigan and Canisius traded blows to begin the third quarter, but three straight goals from Clay gave the Wolverines a 14-5 lead as the third quarter neared its close. Clay scored six goals in three quarters of action, tying the Michigan single-game goals record held by Wolverine legends Brent Noseworthy and Ian King.
The final quarter saw a 3-0 run from Canisius as it held Michigan scoreless for the duration of the fourth. However, the Golden Griffins' run was too little, too late.
Clay was not alone in his historic day, as Mack tallied five goals and freshman Josh Zawada contributed six points (two goals, four assists). Ford had a banner day, scoring his first and second career goals.
Michigan's defense was led by freshmen Dylan Gardner (three ground balls) and Ryan Schriber (one ground ball, two caused turnovers). The Wolverines saw three goalies in net, getting four saves each from senior Matt Trowbridge and sophomore John Kiracofe. Nick Schanhals made two saves in his seven minutes in net to close out the game.
Senior faceoff man Matt Dellacroce went 9-of-12 at the dot with six ground balls and scored his first career goal. Sophomore Nick Rowlett also excelled, going 10-of-14 on faceoffs with six ground balls.
