COSTA MESA, Calif. -- The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team fell to fifth-ranked Yale, 17-11, on Saturday night (March 7) in the Pacific Coast Shootout at LeBard Stadium on the campus of Orange Coast College.
Michigan (3-3) got on the board first with a marker from graduate student Rocco Sutherland 1:55 into the contest, but the Bulldogs (4-1) then rattled off six straight goals led by four tallies from attackman Matt Gaudet, who totaled a game-high seven. Michigan added goals at the 3:31 mark from Sutherland and finished the quarter with a goal from junior Steven Schneider with 53 seconds left made the score 6-3 after one period of play.
U-M outpaced Yale, 4-3, in the second and the score sat at 9-7 at the half. In the third quarter after Zawada brought the scoreline to 9-8 at 12:11, Yale dictated play the rest of the stanza, outscoring the Wolverines, 4-1, the rest of the third. After three quarters, Yale led, 13-8.
In the fourth, the Maize and Blue started off with a three-goal run to cut the deficit to 13-11, but the Bulldogs pulled away for good, holding U-M scoreless for the final eight minutes of action to secure the victory.
Sophomore John Kiracofe stepped in the cage in the second half, making eight saves against eight goals allowed. The Wolverine defensive duo of sophomores Drake Schaffner and Andrew Darby each had a pair of caused turnovers with Schaffner also collecting five ground balls.
Sutherland netted his second hat trick in as many games, while sophomore Bryce Clay also had a hat trick on 10 shots. Zawada led U-M on the night with five points (two goals, three assists). Junior Kevin Mack had an assist to stretch his point streak to 32 games.
