EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team rallied after dropping the doubles point by winning all six singles matches in a 6-1 win over Rutgers on Saturday afternoon (March 13) at the East Brunswick Racquet Club.
Michigan got off to a slow start on the doubles court, falling in early holes at No. 2 and No. 3. The Wolverines were not able to recover, dropping a pair of 6-4 matches at those two spots as Rutgers got the doubles point.
The Maize and Blue took control quickly in singles action, taking all six first sets after graduate student Chiara Lommer rallied from a 5-0 deficit for a 7-5 win at No. 2 to complete the sweep.
Freshman Jaedan Brown was the first Wolverine off court, winning 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4. Brown jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first set en route to the 6-2 win. It was all Brown in the second set as she breezed to a 6-0 victory.
Sophomore and New Jersey native Andrea Cerdan gave Michigan its first lead of the day, 2-1, behind a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 3. Cerdan grabbed control midway through the first set, winning the final three games to take the 6-3 win. She carried that momentum over into the second set, dropping just one game to put U-M's second point on the scoreboard.
Sophomore Nicole Hammond came away with Michigan's third point of the day with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph at No. 6. Hammond used a break midway through the first to take the win. She jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second and that was all the space she needed to pick up the victory.
Freshman Gala Mesochoritou, who moved to 10-0 on the season,  put the deciding point on the board for Michigan with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 5. On serve at 3-2 in the first set, Mesochoritou ripped off four straight games to take the first set. In the second set, the freshman used a break midway through the set for a 5-3 lead, taking the 6-4 win for Michigan's fourth point of the afternoon.
With the team match in hand, U-M converted on the final two matches of the afternoon at the top spots.
Freshman Kari Miller grabbed a 6-2, 7-5 win at the No. 1 spot. After getting the first-set win, Miller raced out to a 4-1 lead in the second set before hanging on for the 7-5 win to collect U-M's fifth point of the match.
Lommer kept Michigan perfect on the singles court with a 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 2. Lommer was down 5-0 in the first set, rallying in true Lommer fashion by winning seven straight games for the win. In the second, she broke a 4-4 tie by winning the final two games to pick up the 99th singles win of her career.
