BALTIMORE, Md. -- The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team secured its first win in program history over the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays, 13-10, on Sunday (April 4) at JHU's Homewood Field.
Sophomore's Josh Zawada and Jake Bonomi each recorded hat tricks, while junior goalie John Kiracofe made 16 stops and had a save percentage of 62 in goal.
Michigan (2-5, 2-5 Big Ten)Â trailed 3-2 after the first quarter, keyed by a pair of goals by Bonomi at 10:32 and 7:06 of the opening quarter.
Johns Hopkins (2-5, 2-5 Big Ten) took a 4-2 lead on an extra-man goal early in the second quarter. U-M answered right back at 13:50 with a marker from freshman Michael Boehm on a helper from graduate student Avery Myers to cut the advantage to 4-3 Blue Jays.
Following an extra-man goal from Johns Hopkins' Brendan Grimes at 12:21 of the second, U-M's Zawada netted an EMO score. Zawada swept from the wing and took a feed from Boehm to make it 5-4 with 11 minutes to go in the second. U-M's Myers tied the contest at 5-5 at 7:24 after beating his short-stick matchup on the low wing and finishing offside hip.
U-M took its first lead of the contest on a marker from Tyler Papa at 4:39 of the second. Papa dodged down the win and finished low-to-high to give Michigan a 6-5 lead that held until the half.
Michigan started fast in the second half, as sophomore Jacob Jackson canned his first of the day on a step-down from the wing off a pass from freshman Kyle Stephenson. Following Jackson's marker, U-M led 7-5 at the 14:08 portion. Another goal from Myers at 11:15 gave U-M the 8-5 lead, and Zawada added his first of the game at 9:23 to give U-M a 9-5 lead and a 6-0 run.
Johns Hopkins ended the run and snapped a scoreless streak of nearly 19 minutes at 8:32, and added another just over a minute later to run the tally to 9-7. Papa added his second of the contest with 1:55 to play in the third as U-M took a 10-7 lead into the final quarter of action.
In the fourth, Bonomi registered his third of the day at 11:21 of the quarter. The hat trick was the first of his U-M career and gave the Wolverines a 11-7 lead. Minutes later, Connor DeSimone brought Johns Hopkins within three at 11-8 and later added his fourth at 7:01 to trim U-M's lead to two.
Following a Johns Hopkins marker that cut the lead to one, freshman Grant McCurry hammered in the second goal of his U-M career at 3:44 to bring the lead back to two at 12-10. Zawada iced the game for U-M with 25 seconds to go, scoring his third of the day and bringing the final tally to 13-10.
U-M was 18-of-20 on clears, helping overcome 20 turnovers. Michigan was outshot on the contest, 38-34, and also lost the ground ball battle by a 35-27 margin.
