COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The fifth-seeded University of Michigan men's lacrosse team scored early and never trailed in defeating No. 4 seed Ohio State 15-11 in the Big Ten Tournament first round on Saturday (May 1) at Ohio Stadium. With the win, the first-ever for U-M in the conference tournament and first against OSU in Columbus, the Wolverines advance to the semifinals to face Maryland.
Michigan (3-8) got off to a fast start, taking a 3-0 lead in the opening six minutes of play. Junior longpole Gavin Legg (14:41), graduate student Tyler Papa (9:48) and sophomore Jacob Jackson (8:52) were the responsible parties in giving U-M the early lead.
Ohio State (4-7) answered with three scores of its own to knot the score at 3 with 5:56 to go in the opening quarter before freshman Michael Boehm put an end to the Buckeye run at 12:16 of the second. Following a score from Buckeye Jackson Reid at 8:33, U-M closed the half on yet another 3-0 run, with junior Bryce Clay scoring at 7:37 on a ride back, while Boehm added his second and third goals of the half at 4:09 and 3:30 to give the Wolverines a 7-4 lead heading into the half.
Ohio State had five failed clears and junior faceoff man Nick Rowlett went 9-of-13 at the dot in the opening half.
In the third, the Buckeyes outscored U-M 4-3, keyed by a pair of scores from Reid. U-M had markers from freshman Grant McCurry, sophomore Jake Bonomi and Jackson in the quarter and led 10-8 with one stanza left to play.
In the fourth, sophomore Josh Zawada got on the board with his first marker of the contest at 12:30 off a loose ball in front. Markers from longpole Ryan Schriber and Bonomi ran Michigan's lead to 13-8 with 8:32 to play in regulation. OSU outscored U-M 3-2 the rest of the way to result in the final tally.
Junior goalie John Kiracofe made 13 saves, highlighted by seven in the fourth quarter, while Rowlett finished the game 13-for-28 at the dot with four ground balls. Legg excelled on the wings and in transition, with a goal, four ground balls and a caused turnover.
The Buckeyes finished the game 12-for-17 on clears, while All-Big Ten attackman Tre Leclaire was held to 1-for-9 shooting. Reid finished the contest with a game-high four goals.

Michigan will take on No. 1-ranked and No. 1-seeded Maryland in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals on Thursday (May 6) at 5 p.m. in State College, Pa. The contest will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
