LINCOLN, Neb. -- Steven Hajjar allowed just one run over eight innings, but that run was the difference as the University of Michigan baseball team fell 1-0 to No. 20-ranked Nebraska on Friday (May 28) at Haymarket Park.
Nebraska (30-11, 30-11 Big Ten) struck for the game's lone run in the sixth inning with two outs. Spencer Schwellenbach singled to left and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Luke Roskam followed with a seeing-eye single through the vacant hole between short and third to score the run easily.
Michigan (26-16, 26-16 B1G) had its chances. In the fourth inning, Benjamin Sems was robbed of an RBI double by right fielder Joe Acker, who made a diving catch with to end the frame. In the fifth, Michigan put a pair of runners on base to start the inning but could not break through. In the sixth, Clark Elliott doubled with one out and advanced to third before being stranded. In the seventh, Tito Flores sent a rocket to the wall in right but was thrown out at third base trying to stretch it into a triple before Griffin Mazur lined a single to left.
Hajjar (4-1) was the tough luck loser, surrendering one run and scattering four hits in a standout eight-inning outing -- his longest of the season -- that saw him strike out five against just two walks. His five strikeouts moved into sole possession of ninth place on the Michigan single-season strikeouts list with 101, passing Brett Adcock, who fanned 100 batters in 2016.
Flores was the lone player in the game to garner multiple hits.
The teams will be back in action Saturday (May 29) in another noon CDT start ay Haymarket Park. The game will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
