CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The sixteenth-ranked University of Michigan women's soccer team won the 300th match in program history behind a pair of goals from senior Raleigh Loughman as U-M defeated Cincinnati 2-1 on Sunday (Sept. 12) at Gettler Stadium.
The milestone victory came in the program's 28th season as a varsity program. Debbie (Belkin) Rademacher (1994-07) leads the program in career victories with 160, while Greg Ryan (2008-17) owns 103 wins. Current head coach Jennifer Klein now sports 37 career wins.
Michigan (6-1-1) fell behind early, conceding its earliest goal of the season in the second minute. A stellar individual effort by Cincinnati's Vanessa DiNardo at the 1:34 mark gave the Bearcats the early lead as she found space at the top of U-M's box and smashed home a shot in the top-left corner.
U-M then settled into the match, creating several chances, with senior Nicki Hernandez having a left-footed shot on frame from the top of the box in the 27th minute. Seconds later, junior Dani Wolfe played a ball from the right side that found senior Meredith Haakenson in stride, but her left-footed shot skipped wide left of goal.
At the half, Michigan held a 6-3 lead in the shot category, with three on goal. U-M's front line put the Cincinnati (4-3-1) backline under pressure throughout, as they were called offsides four times.
Michigan found what it was looking for in the second, with Loughman scoring twice in the first 20 minutes of the half. In the 61st minute, she took a ball from Haakenson at the top of the box and her shot overpowered the Cincinnati goalkeeper top-center to level the count at 1.
Minutes later, U-M earned a penalty kick on a handball that Loughman slotted home to give her two goals in just over two minutes. The penalty goal was U-M's first of the season in three chances.
Senior Hillary Beall then made several key stops as U-M held onto the lead and finished with five saves on the afternoon. U-M outshot the Bearcats 12-11 and also was called offsides eight times.
Loughman's brace is the second of her career, as she previously scored twice against Illinois on Oct. 11, 2019.
