ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 21-ranked University of Michigan women's soccer team trailed for 80-plus minutes, but markers from senior Meredith Haakenson and the overtime winner from Sammi Woods helped U-M knock off Illinois 2-1 in the second overtime period on Friday (Sept. 17) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
Prior to the game, Michigan honored its 11-member senior class on Senior Day.
Michigan (7-1-1, 1-0-0 Big Ten) conceded early, surrendering a penalty kick in the second minute. On the ensuing spot-kick taken by Illinois' Kendra Pasquale, senior goalkeeper Hillary Beall made the stop diving to her left. However, the Wolverine backline was unable to clear the ball to safety, resulting in a follow-up shot that was put home by Makena Silber in traffic, and the Illini were on their way with a 1-0 lead.
Neither team scored the rest of the half, and at the intermission, U-M led on shots 6-5 and had four corners, but was chasing the lead down 1-0.
A golden chance came in the 70th minute, as sophomore Kacey Lawrence earned a free kick from 22 yards out top-center. U-M nearly caught the Illini napping, as senior Raleigh Loughman fed a ball to a darting wide-open classmate Sarah Stratigakis, but her shot was narrowly blocked.
In the 77th, U-M had yet another great chance, this time coming on an outstanding individual effort from junior Lily Farkas. Cutting in on her right at the top of the box, she dusted her defender and went near post, but Illini goalkeeper Naomi Jackson saved the effort to hold the score at 1-0.
The Wolverines marked the well-deserved equalizer in the 81st, as junior Hannah Blake sent in a service from the left flank that was tipped by the Illini goalkeeper, finding the head of Loughman. Her header then found Haakenson, who headed her shot in on the doorstep to run the match level.
In the second half, U-M outshot the Illini 22-2 and earned 10 corners to zero for Illinois (4-4-0, 0-1-0 Big Ten).
Level after 90 minutes, the match headed to extra time. After an even first extra session, U-M had three shots in the opening four minutes of the second session. At the 105:05 mark, Haakenson sent a ball to Wolfe near the touchline that was fed to Woods, who finished lower-left to lift U-M to the 2-1 victory.
