WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The 17th-ranked University of Michigan women's soccer team used a pair of goals from strikers junior Dani Wolfe and sophomore Sammi Woods scoring as the Wolverines knocked off Purdue 2-1 on Thursday night (Sept. 30) at Folk Field.
Michigan (8-1-2, 2-0-1 Big Ten) got on the board first in the 22nd minute after controlling the vast majority of possession, and enjoyed themselves with space in the Purdue defensive third.
The Wolverines were rewarded when junior Dani Wolfe split a pair of Purdue defenders 35 yards out, and finished in close to give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead.
Less than a minute later, Purdue's Sarah Griffith equalized the contest, finishing lower right to knot the contest at 1.
Nearly 10 minutes later, U-M took the lead for good. Freshman Avery Kalitta played an inch-perfect ball to the right flank for senior Meredith Haakenson. Haakenson beat a defender, and then laid off a ball to Woods 12 yards out. Woods' class finish found the middle-left portion of goal for her third marker of the season.
At the break, U-M held a 10-2 lead in the shot category, with six on frame. The Wolverines also registered six corners to only one for Purdue (8-2-2, 3-1-0 Big Ten).
The Wolverines outshot the pressing Boilermaker side 10-4 in the second half and dominated the match as a whole, but were unable to tack on another marker.
U-M's defense was on point all night, holding the Boilermaker offense that averaged two goals and 14.82 shots per match to the lone goal and six shots. Senior goalkeeper Hillary Beall made a pair of stops and was largely untested.
Next up, the Wolverines conclude their Hoosier State road trip with a matchup at Indiana on Sunday (Oct. 3). Match time is slated for 1 p.m. and will be streamed live on B1G+.
