Michigan Grinds Out Top-Five Win Over Indiana

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 6-ranked University of Michigan women's basketball team jumped out to a 9-0 lead and never trailed, using a dominant 52-20 advantage on the glass en route to a 65-50 win over No. 5-ranked Indiana Monday night (Jan. 31) at Crisler Center. It is the second win over a top-five opponent for Michigan this season and the first ever at home.
Naz Hillmon once again led the way for U-M, going for 21 points, five boards and an assist in 37 minutes. Leigha Brown (11) and Laila Phelia (11) joined her in double figures as U-M shot 47.3 percent (26-for-55) from the floor. U-M turned the ball over 25 times but held a commanding 52-20 advantage on the glass, resulting in 14 second-chance points. Emily Kiser led the way on the boards, grabbing a career-best 16 rebounds.
Michigan raced out to a 9-0 lead behind buckets from Hillmon, Kiser and Brown. Brown capped the run with a triple at the top of the key, forcing an Indiana timeout at the 8:18 mark of the first quarter. Michigan led by as many as 12 points in the frame.
Indiana finished the first quarter on a 7-0 run, trimming Michigan's lead to 19-14 after 10 minutes. The 19 points was the highest allowed by Indiana in a first quarter this season.
Indiana tied the game at 21 just moments into the second quarter, but Michigan answered with a 9-0 run for a 30-21 lead off a pair of Hillmon free throws with 3:17 remaining.
Michigan hit the halftime break with a 32-30 lead but battled turnovers in the first half, turning it over 17 times.
The Wolverines held Indiana to just six points in the third period, outscoring the Hoosiers by 10 to take control of the game. U-M scored the first four points of the period on putback layups from Phelia and Amy Dilk.
U-M led 48-36 after a third quarter that saw the Wolverines score 12 of their 16 points in the paint. U-M grabbed 15 boards to Indiana's two in the quarter, leading to 10 second-chance points for the Maize and Blue.
Michigan's lead grew to as many as 16 in the final period, but Indiana kept hanging around. With Michigan holding a nine-point lead with just under 2:00 remaining, Brown hit a running jumper in the lane to push the lead back to double digits, 61-50.
U-M scored the final four points on a pair of Maddie Nolan free throws and a Phelia layup to secure the 15-point win.
The Wolverines hit the road this week, heading to Illinois to face the Illini on Thursday evening (Feb. 3) at 7 p.m. CST.
