
Historic Defensive Performance Helps Pace Michigan to Win Over Holy Cross

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team got a combined seven goals and four assists from the duo of juniors Josh Zawada and Jake Bonomi, and the defense turned in a historic performance in a 20-3 win over Holy Cross on Saturday (Feb. 19) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
Michigan (3-0) was led by its defense, which allowed the fewest single-game goals in program history with three and fewest in a half (zero), coming in the first stanza. Sophomore Shane Carr made eight saves in goal, while defenders Jack Whitney and Andrew Darby caused three and two turnovers, respectively.
U-M's offensive had another prolific day, putting up at least twenty goals for the third straight game. The unit was led by Zawada (four goals, two assists) and Bonomi (3G, 2A). Jacob Jackson, Ryan Cohen and Aidan Mulholland each finished with four points apiece in the effort. Michael Boehm and Isaac Aronson each added two while Justin Brown, Peter Davies, Ben Hull, Kevin Pimental, Ryan Sullivan, Hakan Atillasoy and Emmett Houlihan each chipped in a point.
With six points on the day, Zawada now sits with 98 in his U-M career (54 goals, 44 assists) and could be the fastest Wolverine in program history to reach the 100-point mark.
At the faceoff dot, Michigan went 15-for-27 (55 percent). Senior Nick Rowlett went 5-for-9, sophomore Justin Wietfeldt went 9-for-16 and freshman Matis Cole went 1-for-2.
The Crusaders were led by senior Kilian Morrissey with two goals. Goalie A.J. Fox finished with 12 saves.
With the win, Michigan starts the season 3-0 for the first time since 2017, when the Wolverines started 4-0.
Next up, U-M hosts a pair of opponents at U-M Lacrosse Stadium, beginning with 3 p.m. contest on Tuesday (Feb. 22) against Canisius. That will be followed by a 1 p.m. matchup against Cleveland State on Saturday (Feb. 26).
