IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The No. 6-ranked University of Michigan women's basketball team led by as many as 11 points in the opening quarter but No. 21-ranked Iowa used a 19-5 run over the final 3:40 of the second quarter to grab control in a 104-80 Hawkeye win Sunday afternoon (Feb. 27) at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Naz Hillmon grabbed 15 rebounds in the game, becoming the first player in Michigan basketball history -- man or woman -- to have 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in a career.
Hillmon paced the Maize and Blue with 18 points to go with her 15 boards, recording her 13th double-double of the season. Laila Phelia turned in 16 points, four assists and two boards, with Emily Kiser (12) and Maddie Nolan (11) rounding out Michigan's double-figure scorers. U-M held a 36-29 advantage on the glass, but Iowa made 16 triples at a 55.2 percent clip to combat the edge on the glass.
Michigan raced out to an 11-2 lead, getting a pair of Phelia triples, a jumper from Kiser and a Hillmon layup to cap the opening run at the 7:02 mark of the first quarter.
After Iowa cut the Michigan lead to 13-10 on a pair of back-to-back triples, Michigan countered with its own from Nolan and Rauch.
Michigan led by as many as 11 in the first quarter before Iowa ended the quarter on an 8-2 run, hitting a running three as time expired to give U-M a 25-20 lead after 10 minutes.
Iowa ripped off a 7-0 run to take a 32-31 lead off a putback with 5:49 remaining in the second, its first lead of the afternoon. Following three straight free throws from Hillmon, the score was knotted at 34 with 3:40 left before halftime.
Iowa ended the second quarter on a 19-5 run over the remaining 3:40, hitting the locker room with a 53-39 lead. The Hawkeyes scored 33 points in the second quarter, erasing Michigan's five-point first-quarter lead.
Michigan began the third quarter chipping away at the Iowa lead. A five-point trip that featured a free throw from Nolan, a free throw from Hillmon and a triple from Nolan brought Michigan within eight, 59-51, with 5:49 on the third-quarter clock.
Michigan again closed to eight, 67-59, on a hanging layup from Amy Dilk with 1:54 left, but Iowa again ended the quarter strong on a 9-0 run for a 76-59 lead after 30 minutes.
U-M could not make up ground in the fourth quarter, dropping just its fourth conference game of the season. Michigan finished with 13 wins, tying for the best mark in school history (1999-2000).
Michigan has earned a double-bye in the Big Ten Tournament as the No. 3 seed and will play either Nebraska, Wisconsin or Illinois in a quarterfinals matchup in Indianapolis, Ind., on Friday, March 4, at approximately 8:55 p.m.
