Already armed with four top-10 victories this season, the No. 5-ranked University of Michigan water polo team (5-3) makes its first trip of 2022 to California as the Wolverines compete in the UC San Diego Triton Invitational. The Wolverines open play Saturday against Pomona-Pitzer, then either No. 10 UC Davis or No. 20 LMU.
Team Notes
• Michigan posted a 2-2 record at its own Michigan Invitational two weekends ago (Jan. 29-30), defeating then-No. 5 Hawaii 10-8 and No. 22-ranked Marist 13-5, while losing to No. 2 Stanford 14-5 and No. 3 UCLA 13-9.
• Michigan opened the 2022 campaign with a 3-1 record at the Arizona State University Cross Conference Challenge. It defeated Top 10 foes Arizona State (No. 4), UC Irvine (No. 7) and Fresno State (No. 10) and fell to No. 5-ranked Cal.
• Michigan jumped two one spot in the CWPA Varsity Poll, coming in at No. 5 this week on the strength of a win over Hawaii, who is now sixth in the rankings.
• Michigan's offense is led by fifth-year star Maddie O'Reilly who has demonstrated a balanced scoring effort, tying for the team-high in both goals (14) and assists (11).
• Kayla Barone is tied for the lead in goals (14) on just 27 shot attempts while Kata Utassy is tied with O'Reilly with 11 assists. Erin Neustrom sits in double figures with 10 goals.
• Senior Alex Brown has started all eight games in net for the Wolverines (3-3) but has virtually split playing time with Sophie Jackson (2-0) with the duo recording nearly identical save percentages.
Opponent Preview
Pomona-Pitzer: The Sagehens enter play at 2-6 on the young season, earning wins over Biola (9-7) and LaSalle (9-8). Pomona-Pitzer has one common opponent with Michigan in Marist, with the Red Foxes defeating the Sagehens 12-7 in a Feb. 5 matchup in Providence, R.I.
Other Competition: Other teams competing at the 15-team Triton Invitational are No. 1 USC, No. 3 UCLA, No. 6 Hawaii, No. 7 UC Irvine, No. 10 UC Davis, No. 12 UC San Diego, No. 13 Long Beach State, No. 16 UC Santa Barbara, No. 19 San Diego State, No. 20 Loyola Marymount, No. 23 Marist, Cal State Northridge and Santa Clara.
