MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- The No. 16 University of Michigan men's lacrosse team moved to 6-0 with a 12-10 victory over the Marquette Golden Eagles on Tuesday (March 1) at Marquette's Valley Fields.
Junior Josh Zawada had four assists to set the U-M career record and added two goals. He now sports 52 helpers in his Wolverine career, breaking the record previously held by Ian King (2014-17). Additionally, his six points in the contest give him 114 in his career, moving him past Kyle Jackson (2013-16) for third all-time. Sophomore Michael Boehm added three goals and three assists for the Wolverines.
Michigan (6-0) fell behind early and trailed 3-0 10 minutes into the contest before Zawada marked his first of four helpers, feeding junior Michael Cosgrove, who finished in transition with five minutes to go in the opening stanza.
The score held heading into the second, as U-M scored its fewest goals (one) in any quarter on the year. After allowing a Marquette tally seconds into the stanza, Michigan outscored the Golden Eagles 7-3 in the quarter, keyed by a 4-0 run from the 7:40 mark to 4:36 with a pair of goals from Boehm to pull Michigan in front, 7-5. Boehm also had three assists during the period.
The teams then traded goals the final two minutes of the quarter, with freshman Ryan Cohen marking his first of the day with 54 seconds left in the half as U-M led 8-6 after two quarters of action. At the intermission, U-M held a 20-15 lead in shots and was perfect on clearing (11 of 11).
Marquette started the third quarter on a 2-0 run to forge an 8-8 tie, but the Wolverines rattled off four of the last six goals in the contest. Leading 12-9 after three, the Wolverine defensive turned up the intensity, allowing only one goal the final 15 minutes en route to securing the 12-10 win.
After a slow start, junior Nick Rowlett finished with a 13-of-21 stat line at the dot to go along with six ground balls. Sophomore goalie Shane Carr made nine saves, including three in the fourth quarter. Defensive midfielder Cosgrove had a great all-around day with a goal and four ground balls.
