ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 16-ranked University of Michigan men's lacrosse team moved to 7-0 on Saturday (March 5) with an 18-8 victory over the No. 17-ranked Delaware Blue Hens at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
Michigan (7-0) got off to a slow start and found itself down three goals to none just five minutes into the opening quarter. Following a timeout, U-M powered ahead on a nine-goal scoring run and led 10-5 at halftime. Coming out of the break, the Blue Hens (4-2) were again able to score a few unanswered goals right out of the gate, but the Wolverines responded and added eight more goals in the second half to seal the victory.
The offense was led by the trio of junior Jake Bonomi, junior Josh Zawada and sophomore Michael Boehm. Bonomi scored five goals while sophomore attackman Boehm added four goals and one assist.
Zawada's prolific scoring year continued as he scored three goals and marked two assists. His third point of the day, an assist to Bonomi, broke the U-M single-season record for points in a season (48), passing Brent Noseworthy (2018) and Alex Buckanavage (2019).
Other Wolverines adding to the box score included freshman Ryan Cohen (1 goal, 3 assists), freshman Aidan Mulholland (1G, 2A), junior Jacob Jackson (1G, 1A) and sophomore Isaac Aronson (1G, 1A).
Sophomore Shane Carr had 20 saves in goal, which marks the third most in program history, while Justin Wietfeldt led the way at face-off going 11-21 with seven ground balls.
The victory is U-M's fifth all-time over a ranked opponent and the first time that the Wolverines have defeated a ranked team while being ranked themselves.
Up next, Michigan will host Harvard at 3 p.m. on Saturday (March 12) at U.M. Lacrosse Stadium.
