ORLANDO, Fla. --Â The University of Michigan men's track and field team made its 2022 outdoor debut Friday (March 18) at the UCF Black and Gold Invitational, opening the campaign up with strong performances in the field.
On the first of two days of competition in Orlando, jumper Cassidy Henshaw and thrower Eli Winter both posted top-eight finishes in deep fields to headline the Wolverines' first impression this spring. Both men achieved their performances before passing storms forced the meet into an hour-long weather delay.
Henshaw was the top finisher by place for the Wolverines as he leapt 7.08m (23-2.75) to finish seventh in the long jump.
In the discus, Winter made his Michigan outdoor debut in the discus with a heave of 52.10m (170-11) that moved him up to No. 13 in school history for the event. The mark will also put him in the conversation for qualification to the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds later this season, reserved for the top-48 in each event in the NCAA East Region. The average last mark into the meet over the last three years was 51.79m.
Also finishing top-10 for the Wolverines were eighth-place Leo Gabaron in the 400-meter hurdles in 55.83 and 10th-place Henry Sheldon in the pole vault at 4.76m (15-7.5).
The meet continues Saturday around noon.
