ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 5-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team earned its eighth consecutive victory with a 4-0 win over Nebraska on Friday evening (March 25) in its Big Ten Conference season opener.
Michigan was able to secure the doubles point after wins on courts one and three. The No. 6-ranked duo of Nino Ehrenschneider and Andrew Fenty held off a late comeback and broke serve to clinch a 6-2 triumph. After Nebraska won on court two, the combination of Nick Beaty and Patrick Maloney extended their winning streak to seven matches with a 6-3 victory at No. 3, with Beaty serving two aces in the clinching game.Â
No. 27-ranked Ondrej Styler secured the first singles win at No. 1, ultimately defeating Dario Huber 6-3, 6-3 -- extending his winning streak to five matches. Gavin Young followed suit at No. 4 singles, breezing through his match 6-4, 6-1 and extending his team-leading singles victories to 19. No. 43-ranked Jacob Bickersteth and Will Cooksey both battled through their matches at No. 3 (3-6, 4-5) and No. 6 (4-6, 3-5) singles respectively, ending the evening unfinished.
No. 33-ranked Fenty secured his first set and was at 6-4, 3-4 at No. 2 singles before the match ended. Beaty clinched the match at No. 5 singles, defeating Nebraska's Nic Wiedenhorn 6-3, 6-4 and extending his winning streak to eight.
The Wolverines will return to the Varsity Tennis Center on Sunday (March 27) when they host Wisconsin. First serve is scheduled for noon.
