
Grizzlies, Three vs. Hawkeyes to Start Eight-Game Homestand for Wolverines

Schedule Update: Friday's (April 1) series opener between Michigan and Iowa has been moved Saturday (April 2) due to the weather. The teams will now play a doubleheader on Saturday (April 2) beginning at noon, with the series finale still scheduled for Sunday (April 3) at 1 p.m.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team (13-10, 2-1 Big Ten) returns to the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium, for eight straight games starting Wednesday (March 30) against Oakland University before hosting a Big Ten Conference weekend series against Iowa (April 2-3).
The Week That Was
• Michigan posted a 2-2 mark over the week, but both came in Big Ten play as the Wolverines won their weekend series (March 25-27) at preseason conference favorite Nebraska. The Wolverines dropped a wild Friday night game before coming back to win impressively on Saturday and Sunday.
• Michigan set a Big Ten record with four consecutive home runs Friday night at Nebraska. Matt Frey, Jimmy Obertop, Ted Burton and Tito Flores all connected for long balls in the top of the fifth inning.
• Burton added a second home run in the opener. Flores added two doubles to finish the game with three extra-base hits as the Wolverines banged out 16 hits, including eight for extra bases while limiting Nebraska to eight total hits.
• Frey finished the weekend with solo home runs in all three games. Flores batted .545, and Obertop batted .455 during the series.
• Junior Jimmy Obertop connected on a two-run double on an 0-2 count with two outs in the top of the ninth inning to break a tie and give Michigan an 8-6 win on Saturday.
• On Sunday, pitchers Jacob Denner and Noah Rennard combined to limit Nebraska to six hits while striking out 10 batters in a 6-1 win.
Scouting Oakland
• The Grizzlies enters midweek play at 9-12 overall with a Tuesday game against Division II member Saginaw Valley State.
• The team is led offensively by Brandon Nigh's .318 batting average and .474 on-base percentage. Ian Cleary (.302) leads in the power numbers with five homers and 16 runs batted in, while Seth Tucker (.296) has stolen 10 base out of 12 attempts.
• Oakland has not announced a starting pitcher.
Scouting Iowa
• The Hawkeyes enter the weekend at 12-9 overall and will be playing their Big Ten openers. The team, also among the favorites for a conference title, has one opponent in common with U-M as the Hawkeyes split a two-game series against Texas Tech. Iowa's Tuesday (March 29) game at Illinois State was canceled due to weather.
• The Hawkeyes are led offensively by Peyton Williams (.364, 9 2B, 5 HR, 16 RBI, .467 OBP) and Keaton Anthony (.347, 11 2B, 3 HR, 17 RBI, .440 OBP), while 12 different position players have started at least eight games.
• Iowa's pitching has been sensational throughout the early going. Hurlers have combined for 268 strikeouts and a .189 batting average against (127 hits) in 186.1 innings of work. The Hawkeyes have allowed just 35 extra-base hits in their 21 games. Ty Langenberg (3-0, 2.31 ERA, .230 BAA, 31 K in 23.1 IP), Adam Mazur (2-1, 3.82 ERA, .154 BAA, 38 K in 33.0 IP) and Dylan Nedved (1-2, 4.88 ERA, .177 BAA, 29 K in 24.0 IP) have been the most formidable starters. Ben Beutel (1-0, 2.89 ERA) has already made 10 relief appearances and struck out 15 batters in 9.1 innings, while Luke Llewellyn (1-0, 0.00 ERA) has three saves.
