
Late Rally Not Enough as U-M Drops Regular Season Finale at OSU, 14-12

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team outscored the No. 11 Ohio State Buckeyes 4-0 in the fourth quarter and was within three goals on six occasions, but the Wolverines were unable to overcome a 6-0 deficit in the early going and fell to the Buckeyes 14-12 on Sunday night (April 24) at Ohio Stadium.
The result locks in a rematch at Ohio State on Saturday (April 30) in the Big Ten Tournament Quarterfinals in Columbus. U-M is the No. 6 seed for the tournament and the Buckeyes are the No. 3 seed. The time for the contest is 1 p.m..
With five points (2 goals, 3 assists), junior Josh Zawada tied the U-M career record for points with 144, held by Ian King (2014-17), with one guaranteed contest remaining on the year.
Michigan (7-7, 0-5 B1G) fell behind early, surrendering the first six goals of the contest, and trailed 6-0 with 5:20 to play in the first quarter. From there, U-M began a 4-0 run with tallies from freshman Ryan Cohen (5:14), Aidan Mulholland (1:09) and sophomore Justin Brown (:24), bringing the count to 6-3 at the end of the first period.
Coming out of the gates in the second, sophomore Isaac Aronson canned a contested shot from up top on the extra-man, bringing U-M within two, 6-4, at the 12:17 mark of the second and capping off the four-goal rally. Ohio State (9-4, 3-2 B1G) then answered with three-straight markers for a 9-4 Buckeye lead.
U-M responded with a pair of markers in the last 28 seconds of the second period, including a goal from sophomore Michael Boehm and a buzzer-beater from Zawada. Michigan trailed 9-6 at the half.
The two sides traded goals to begin the third, with Cohen credited with his second and third goals at 10:02 and 5:37, but the Buckeyes outscored the Wolverines 3-2 in the period and Ohio State owned a 12-8 lead heading into the final frame.

Back-to-back OSU goals to begin the fourth allowed the Buckeyes to stretch the lead to 14-8 with 12:59 to play. From there, however, it was all the Wolverines, with Zawada (7:47), Mulholland (6:09), Brown (3:17) and Boehm (2:35) connecting with the back of the net on a 4-0 Michigan run.
From there, U-M won the ensuing faceoff but was unable to capitalize on a pair of shots with just under two minutes to play. Time expired before the rally could continue, with Ohio State on top, 14-12.
Zawada led U-M with his five points, while Cohen added three goals and one assist. Boehm tallied two goals and two helpers on the evening and senior close defender Andrew Darby had five ground balls. U-M turned the ball over only nine times and went 17-of-19 on clears. As a whole, the U-M man-up unit went 3-for-5.
