ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team returns home to Ray Fisher Stadium this weekend when the Wolverines host Ohio State in a three-game set (April 22-24). The weekend series will feature multiple promotions, including a Student Study Break BBQ, Superhero Day, Maize Out and more.
The Week That Was
• Michigan earned a three-game sweep of Michigan State over the weekend (April 15-17), giving the Wolverines 15 wins in their last 17 games against the Spartans dating back to 2017. Michigan took Friday night's opener by a score of 18-6 in a game played at Jackson Field, home of the Lansing Lugnuts. The Wolverines clubbed a season-high six home runs in the game, including three by junior right fielder Clark Elliott. Michigan eased to an 8-2 win on Saturday and a 6-3 win on Sunday.
• Michigan clubbed 17 extra-base hits in the three-game series, including eight homers. The effort matched U-M's highest three-game series output since doing so against Nebraska earlier this season (March 25-27), also on the road. Â
• In Friday night's win, Elliott became the first U-M player to hit three home runs in a game since 2016. He led off the game with a homer, connected for a longer grand slam in the second inning and hit an even longer three-run shot in the ninth inning. In between, he singled, walked and stole a base. Â
• Elliott finished the weekend 6-for-16 with a .500 on-base percentage, which led all players in the series. Â
• Graduate transfer Joe Stewart had a great series against his former team. Stewart shook off being hit in the head in the second inning of Friday night's game by immediately stealing the first of two bases in the series and later homered against the Spartans. He added a hustle double on Sunday before homering again, this time a three-run job to deep centerfield that sealed U-M's 6-3 win. All told, he batted 5-for-14 in the series. Â
• Sophomore Chase Allen made just his second start of the season in Sunday's game and threw 5.0 scoreless innings of two-hit ball to earn his fifth win against no losses.
• Junior Cameron Weston tied a season-high with nine strikeouts in 7.0 impressive innings on Saturday, allowing just two runs on two hits.
• Michigan pitchers struck out 34 MSU hitters in 27.0 innings of work in the series.
Scouting Ohio State
• The Buckeyes enter the week at 11-21 overall and 2-8 in Big Ten play with a Tuesday game against Marshall. OSU was swept by Maryland on the road last weekend, losing a pair of close games, 8-6 and 6-5, before dropping a 16-1 blowout on Sunday.
• Ohio State is led by Marcus Ernst (.362, 12 RBI), Trey Lipsey (.316, 4 HR, 19 RBI, 9-11 SB) and Zach Dezenzo (.274, 9 HR, 28 RBI) with a capable offense that has six batters over the .274 mark.
• The Buckeyes have had three reliable starters in Isaiah Coupet (2-3, 4.46 ERA, 64 K, 40.1 IP), Wyatt Loncar (1-4, 5.46 ERA, 47 K, 31.1 IP) and Nate Haberthier (0-3, 6.63 ERA, 45 H, 38.0 IP) while Jake Johnson (14 APP, 2-2, 2.91 ERA, 24 K, 21.2 IP) and Ethan Hammerberg (15 APP, 2-3, 3.52 ERA, 33 K, 23.0 IP) anchor the bullpen.
