NORMAN, Okla. -- University of Michigan women's golfer Ashley Lau was one of 12 women's amateur golfers selected Tuesday (April 19) for the 2022 International Team which will compete against the United States team at the 2022 Palmer Cup (July 1-3) in Cologny, Switzerland and the Golf Club de Genève.
In a Ryder Cup-style tournament co-founded by golfing legend Arnold Palmer and The Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA), the prestigious event features 12-member men's and women's squads battling each other for the Palmer Cup.
"Being part of such a prestigious event is such an incredible honor," said Lau. "To think that I'll be going to Switzerland, I can't wait! I'm very much looking forward to making new friends and playing some great golf alongside some of the best golfers in the world. We rarely play match play in collegiate tournaments so it is going to be a fun and exciting experience."
Lau joins the 12-member team which includes 10 additional U.S. collegiate players -- San Jose State teammates Natasha Andrea Oon (Malaysia) and Kajsa Arwefjäll (Sweden), Wake Forest's Carolina Chacarra (Spain), South Carolina's Hannah Darling (Scotland), Arizona State's Alexandra Forsterling (Germany), Stanford's Aline Krauter (Germany), Mississippi State's Julia Lopez Ramirez (Spain), Oregon's Hsin-Yu Lu (Taiwan), Alabama's Benedetta Moresco (Italy) and Florida State's Amelia Williamson (England). The 12th selection was Scotland's Lorna McClymont (Stirling).
The International Team will be headed up by Diana Cantú (Mexico), who is currently the head coach at Tennessee. She will be assisted by Kentucky head coach Golda Borst (Sweden).
"The Palmer Cup is one of the premier amateur events in the world," said U-M head coach Jan Dowling, who has served as an International Team assistant in 2017 (France) and head coach (Arkansas) in 2018. "Ashley (Lau) is right where she belongs. The mixed format is really fun and extremely competitive. She's in for an experience of a lifetime!"
In her senior season in Ann Arbor, Lau is having a record-breaking campaign. On pace to set the U-M single-season scoring record (71.44), she has won three individual events and led the Wolverines overall in six of nine events heading into the postseason.
This season she fired a career-low 66 (-4) in the second round of the VyStar Gators Invitational (March 5-6, 2022), tying the second lowest total in program history. With that tally, Lau set U-M's 54-hole record with a 203 (-7) score. With a team-best 10 sub-par rounds, she has set the program record with 23 in her career.
Lau has not missed an event in four seasons, starting 36 straight tournaments.
The Palmer Cup began in 1997 and incorporated a women's amateur squad in 2018. Since then, the Cup has been evenly split between the U.S. and International teams. The U.S. team won in 2018 (France; Evian Resort Golf Club) and 2021 (Illinois; Rich Harvest Farms), while the International team won back-to-back events in 2019 (Arkansas; The Alotian Club) -- with the team headed up by Dowling -- and 2020 (Florida; Bay Hill Club & Lodge).
