
Michigan Wraps Weekend with Victories over Mount St. Mary's, Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J. -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan water polo team wrapped up a four-win weekend as the Wolverines defeated Mount St. Mary's, 15-1, and No. 19-ranked Princeton, 16-11, on Sunday (April 3) at DeNunzio Pool.
Michigan (20-8, 8-0 CWPA) was led by Maddie O'Reilly with five goals, while Maddy Steere and Ava Morrant chipped in four goals apiece on the day. Alex Brown tallied 14 saves over one and a half games allowing 11 goals.
With the win against Princeton, head coach Dr. Marcelo Leonardi clinched his 50th CWPA victory (52 games).
The Wolverines are back on the road next weekend (April 9-10) for a four-game CWPA stretch in Cambridge, Mass., taking on Brown, Princeton, Harvard and Saint Francis.
Game 1: #7 Michigan 15, Mount St. Mary's 1
Michigan opened up the second day of play and the third game of the weekend with a dominant 15-1 victory over Mount St. Mary's. Erin Neustrom scored in the first 20 seconds of the game and then again at the 4:35 mark to give Michigan its first two goals. Sophie Tovani and Ashley O'Neill followed with two goals apiece, which put the Wolverines up 4-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Alison Lock, Kata Utassy, and Kasey Umlauf each found the back of the net in the second quarter. Alex Brown came up with six saves and allowed no goals in the first half of play.
Lock scored first for Michigan in the third quarter, nabbing her second goal of the game. Maddie O'Reilly found the back of the net twice in a row to end the third quarter with an 11-1 lead over Mount St. Mary's.
In the final quarter of play, Sammi Monroe found the back of the net twice, while Grace Harbaugh and Jess Henningsen each chipped in one goal to give Michigan the win over Mount St. Mary's, 15-1.
Michigan was led by Monroe, Neustrom, Lock, and O'Reilly with two goals apiece offensively. Defensively, Lock, and Utassy came up with three steals each, while Brown and Sophie Jackson combined for eight saves.
Game 2: #7 Michigan 16, #19 Princeton 11
The final game of the weekend was back and forth throughout the first eight minutes ofplay, with Michigan coming out of the first quarter leading 3-2 behind goals from Sofie Pontré, Kayla Barone, and Elise Walker.
In the second quarter of play, Maddy Steere scored first. Ava Morrant and O'Reilly both found the back of the net twice to put Michigan up 8-5 heading into halftime.
In the third quarter, both Princeton and Michigan scored four times. For the Wolverines, Steere, O'Reilly, Morrant, and Neustrom all chipped in one goal.
It was all Michigan in the final quarter of play. Steere scored back-to-back goals, with Lola Ciruli and Morrant there to chip in one apiece to hoist the Wolverines over 19th-ranked Princeton, 16-11.
Steere and Morrant led Michigan with four goals each in the win over the Tigers, while O'Reilly earned a hat trick. Brown tallied eight saves in the Wolverine victory.
