DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The University of Michigan spirit team continued its string of success in the National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) & United Dance Association (UDA) Collegiate Cheer & Dance Championship with two national titles on Friday (April 9). The Wolverines took home Coed Division IA and Game Day victories for the second straight season.
In the Intermediate Large Coed IA division, Michigan had an event score of 97.4352 to top East Carolina (96.5139) and Georgia Southern (96.3472). The event scores are calculated based on 75 percent of the finals score added to 25 percent of the prelims score. The Wolverines, who sat in third place after the qualifying competition Thursday, rallied for a 97.5926 in the finals to improve on their preliminary score of 96.963 by more than six-tenths.
The Game Day IA finals saw the Wolverines score a 96.7333, coupled with a 95.9167Â in prelims for a total event score of 96.5292, narrowly besting SMU (96.1417), NC State (95.2750) and North Texas (94.9583). The U-M cheer team was joined by Michigan Marching Band members in the Game Day competition.
The pair of titles gives U-M 10 NCA championships since 2013. The Wolverines have won seven Coed Division IA titles, with four straight in 2013-16 and 2019 and 2021. Previous Game Day wins came in 2019 and 2021. The championships were not held in 2020 due to COVID-19, and Michigan competed in the virtual divisions in 2021.
"We are very proud of this team and our two championships," said head coach Pam St. John. "We went into nationals with minimal competitive experience and with many first-year athletes. We are very grateful for the support from our administration as they give us the resources and staff to develop our cheer athletes. This one is especially sweet because our athletes worked so very hard!"
